PART 4:
WHEN THE WORLD IS SAFE
(EDDIE MUNSON DIES)

THE LAST THING THAT FRANKLIN COLLYMORE gave Max, Lucas and Erica was a Choc Dip. The last thing he told them was, "Can't kill interdimensional creepy-crawlies without proper sustenance, right?" And he let them dip the biscuit in the hard chocolate.

The last thing they told him was, "These Choc Dips are shit." And Frankie wouldn't have it any other way—ruffling their hair and sending them off to their death with a closed-eye smile.

Nancy and the others shared the last Choc Dips amongst themselves. Nancy had smiled when she ate hers—the taste was stale and the biscuit itself was weirdly crumbly. The chocolate didn't help one bit, because it was hard and frosted over in whatever air had been contained in Frankie's bag for a long period of time…But it still felt like home.

Robin and Steve ate theirs in silence; the taste was like none other, that's for sure. But with the death toll above their heads and time ticking—it surely would have tasted better than the bitter taste of death.

The last thing Franklin Collymore gave Eddie Munson was the last Choc Dip. Dustin seemed to love the taste—the boy never had been a picky eater, after all. But Eddie hated it. All that bullshit about 'tasting like home' or 'better than death' did not apply in the Munson's taste buds. Not at all. So he gave the rest to Frankie. Not as an act of hate or pettiness—but because even though Eddie hated the taste, Frankie still enjoyed it. So instead of sucking it up, he gave it to someone grateful instead.

You give these to him yourself, then.

Nancy's voice echoed through Franklin's mind, all the way back when she was roping him into all this mess and straight to his death. Was giving the last Choc Dip really the last thing he would give to Eddie Munson, who had given it back to him despite the gesture?

No. No, it wasn't. The last thing Franklin Collymore gave to Eddie Munson—under the red hue of the portal and everyone else gone—was a kiss. Not anything out of this world. Simply a kiss on the cheek. A gesture of good luck. But Franklin did not want Eddie to give this back. Not yet.

Because he didn't want this kiss to be the last thing that Franklin Collymore gave to Eddie Munson. This kiss was simply a token—one given, then one returned. He would give away his kiss. Eddie Munson must live in order to give it back.

That was the deal.

That was the deal—so why?

"Okay. I wanna run through it one more time." Nancy said before exiting the trailer, stopping and turning so that she faced the Upside Down group (a.k.a. everyone in the car). "Phase One."

Robin spoke from the table, "We meet Erica at the playground. She'll signal Max and Lucas when we're ready."

Nancy nods, "Phase Two."

"Max baits Vecna," Steve spoke from sitting on the kitchen counter, "He'll go after her, which'll put him in his trance."

"Phase Three?"

Dustin sat at the table and pointed behind him where Eddie stood, "Me and Eddie draw the bats away."

"Four?"

"We head into Vecna's newly bat-free lair, and…" Robin pulls out a molotov from her bag, "...flambé."

Nancy nods, sighing. She looks to her best friend, who was sitting quietly in the back, "And the back-up plan?"
