Prologue

The room was lit only by a dim candle that barely managed to light up anything but two figures, which were in the middle of the room. One was an older gentleman that looked to be in his late 50s and he laid there on a bed, looking as if he was in severe pain. The other looked to be in his mid twenties and sat in a chair next to the bed, clutching desperately to the older man's hand.

“You have to take care of her, you're all each other has left.” the older man said, shaking slightly and wincing as another jolt of pain went through him.

“There has to be some way to save you, we can't lose you too dad,” the younger man whispered, his eyes filled with tears that he had been always taught to hold in.

“You have to run this place and you have to protect her no matter what. You have to promise me that, that's the only thing I need you to do for me, John.”

“I promise dad, I promise.”

“Good, I love you two. Tell Lizzy I love her and that I'll always be watching over the two of you.” with those last words the father shut his eyes. For the first time since he was a child, tears escaped John's eyes as he looked down at his father, who has just died right in his arms. He knew he should have been able to do something or at least tried to do something, but he knew that nothing would have helped his dad, he was already too far gone.

The door crashed open, revealing a girl that who had just celebrated her 20th birthday the day before. She had long blonde hair that was pin straight and highlighted. Her blue eyes were wide open and words escaped her before she could stop them. “He's dead,” she whimpered slightly before falling to the ground, placing her head in her hands as if that could bring him back to them. She knew it was impossible and as that thought came to her, a few tears managed to escape, the first time she had cried since she was a child as well.

They had been raised to be tough, to not show weakness, but as he joined her on the floor, holding her close and both sitting in the silence, it dawned on them that at some points it was impossible to stop the pain. They were all each other had left and now their father had left them in charge of a gang that had been passed down through their family.

There was nothing they could do except accept the fact that they were the ones in charge and that they had a long road in front of them.

They sat there in the darkness though, not moving at all, most likely not wanting to face all the changes that would occur when they walked out that door. The new leaders of the only gang that could truly threaten the wizard community, the only threat that rivaled You-Know-Who's. One of them that could only think about his promise to his father and another that had the odd of gift of understanding life, death and pain better than anyone else.

Don't be afraid of death; be afraid of an unlived life. You don't have to live forever, you just have to live.”
