Louis
After I dropped off Daisy, I drive back to the palace. Yes, I lied. I had nowhere to go but Daisy wouldn't have listened to me otherwise. She's stubborn. Like really stubborn. But she's also independent and that's what I like about her. Not actually like, it's just what I admire about her, you know?
As I enter the palace with my hair a bit wet because of the rain, I bump into my younger brother, Maxwell Ford Hawthorne. He's 16 and a flirt.
"Louis!" He exclaims. "Did you drop Daisy off safely?" I begin to wonder how the fuck he knows but then I remember Florence.
I nod, not saying anything. Just then his twin, Adelaide Pearl Hawthorne walks up to us with Florence by her side.
"So where'd you go after dropping Daisy off?" Pearl asks. "Flo mentioned you had to go somewhere after dropping her." She smirks. I glare at Flo and she shrugs.
"Why bother asking if you know the answer already?" I say, running a hand through my hair.
"Oh, come on man. Just admit you like her." Max says and I glare at him.
"I don't like her. I'm only being kind to her because she's Florence's best friend." I tell him. All three of them shake their head at me. "Besides, I hate her. She gets on my nerves at times except for today."
"Then why you chose a dress for her that matches your suit?" Flo asks me.
I hesitate. "She was taking too long to choose, alright? I wanted her to hurry up and forget that my suit was the same colour."
Again, all three of them shake their head and turn their back towards me. Walking away, I hear Pearl mutter, "Lord, have mercy. What an oblivious asshole."
"I HEARD THAT! AND NO CURSING!" I shout at her. Without looking back, she calls back, "GOOD. YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO. AND I'M NOT A BABY SO I CAN CURSE!"
I roll my eyes at her even though she can't see it. I make my way to my room and lock the door. I take a towel dry my hair and stop midway. I heard Daisy mention to Flo that towel drying is terrible so I throw the towel on the bed and go into the bathroom to use a hairdryer. I'm only listening to Daisy because I value my hair. It's an essential part of me.
I walk out of the bathroom and hear a knock on the door.
"Louis? Can I come in?" My mum, Dahlia Misty Hawthorne asks. My mum is a fantastic woman. She was a commoner and my dad fell in love with her the moment he laid eyes on her. It was probably love at first sight. I go to the door and unlock it. I smile at my mum, open the door even wider, and let her enter.
"How was the dress shopping with Daisy?" She asks and I groan. "Mum, I didn't just go with Daisy, y'know? Xanthos and Willow were there. Your daughter too." I say to her, walking back to the sofa and sitting down.
"But you went for her." She says it like it's true, which isn't.
"Can people stop assuming I like her? I don't."
"I didn't say you like her." I groan running a hand through my hair.
"Flo told me you chose her dress and it matches your suit. What's that about?" She asks.
"Mum, cmon now. I was only being kind." I tell her, moving aside so she can sit on the sofa.
"You were never kind to her, my dear. You'd always tease her with something else in mind so what's this about?"
I keep quiet. "Anyway, I didn't come here for this. Your dad is calling you to his office." I instantly get up and walk to the door but not before I hear moum mutter, "I gave birth to an idiot."
***
I knock on my dad's office and hear a small, 'Come in.' I enter and see my dad sitting on his sofa.
"You're here. Good. Sit down, son," he tells me and I sit down. My dad, Spencer Luke Hawthorne is a man in his 50s but he looks a lot younger than that. You may think, he's a king and never had time for his family but it's the exact opposite. He never had much time when we grew older but he always tried to make time.
"What's up?" I ask, taking a seat near him.
"Do you know why we are holding a ball?" He asks me, sipping whatever beverage is in his cup.
"No, you told us it was a surprise." It's the truth. He announced to everyone saying that the king was holding a ball. No reason.
"It's to announce your marriage and coronation." He tells me and my eyes widen. Marriage? Oh hell nah. I'm only 25. And coronation? That's fine. I always wanted to be king. I find it pleasant to help my country.
"You never told me about the marriage," I tell him. "Why do I have to get married?"
"To be king, you must get married. It's in the law. I know you don't want to get married yet but it's the only way." He says with a grim look.
There is 5 minutes of silence. "Who's the bride?" I ask.
"There will be princesses from different countries and you can choose one of them." He says it like it's easy. Well, to him it probably is. I love my dad but this isn't what I want. I want to be the king so if I have to get married then yeah, I will.
"Alright. Well, thanks for informing me, Dad." I get up from the sofa and leave his office. I close the door to his office and stand there for a few seconds before deciding to go to a balcony to relieve stress. I walk to my favourite balcony. It's on the fourth floor, my favourite floor. Why? Because it's empty and quiet and the most beautiful floor. It's grey and filled with amazing dark academic paintings. It's just gorgeous. When Daisy was usually upset, she'd sneak up to the fourth floor. I was curious about why she would usually go there but when I saw the floor myself, I understood why. You forget everything here. The paintings just seduce you.
I go to the last room, the one Daisy usually went into. It's her favourite room. It's filled with Greek mythology. Paintings of Aphrodite, Psyche, Eros and many more. I stand on the balcony. It's still raining but it wasn't as bad as before. When we were kids, Daisy and I were the only ones who loved Greek mythology. Sad that we hated each other's guts. My mind slowly drifts to my ball. Coronation. I'm not ready.
