☾Cassie ☾

I have a father, like everyone else on this planet. But I, on the other hand, also never had a dad. Sadly, even a missing dad can bring many problems.

My name is Cassis Simmons. I'm 17, and I always thought my father died when I was six. I also thought my mother was not a liar and that she loved me. Maybe she did, I'm famous for being melodramatic enough. In any case, I can't get any confirmation on the matter anymore.

Two weeks ago, a storm hit the coast of North Carolina and destroyed everything. It destroyed my everything.

My house, my beach, and my mom. all gone. I should be sad. I think I am, but I don't have time to think about it because I am desperate. My mother used to say that it was just me and her against the world, and that all we needed was each other. It really was, it could have been, and it should have been like that.

But now, I am standing awkwardly in the social worker's office, searching for a way to escape this place.

"Please, Cassie, sit back down." Her voice is trying to calm me down, but I am already feeling the storm build up inside my gut.

I move closer to the velvet old chair but can't bring myself to touch it, like I'm afraid to get burn or something.

"I know that you must be really confused right now."

You think? I thought, feeling an acid taste in the back of my mouth. I pierced through her brown eyes, trying to collect myself from all the anger I felt inside. I close my eyes for a split second before finally gathering the strength to speak.

"So, you're telling me that you found my dad through a DNA test my mom requested, without my consent, and mysteriously three fucking days before her death, but that... my dad has been reported fucking missing for nearly a year, am I getting this right?"

She smiles, not even trying to hide her embarrassment, and I watch, rolling my eyes up to the fluorescent light on the ceiling.

An angel passes before I ask the question, which she obviously is waiting for.

"So now what?"

She stands there, straightening in her seat, and takes a paper in her hand, giving it to me.

"This piece of paper is to be filled with all of your personal information. We can then prepare you for a foster family to take you in until you are legally an adult or your dad is found."
