"So that's the Cameron's' house?" I glance at the big gates surrounding what seems to be a mansion. Topper is scanning its surroundings as I approach it.

"Is that a camera?" I ask, pivoting to my friend.

"Looks like it, yeah," he responds, and I bring my hoodie to my head, trying to cover my face.

"don't worry" topper looms closer to me. "No one has been here for weeks now. I don't even think that the security system is still up."

"Yeah, I don't think I want to find that out." I take a step back.  I am not usually the cautious one. But I'm not feeling this knowing that if I get caught, the punishment will be a foster home and never finding my brother.

But Topper surprises me by jumping over it. He turns to me with a devilish smile and dares me to follow.

"What's the matter, little criminal, too illegal for you?"

Is that a dare? I'm a sucker for those. I gasped while climbing it and almost fell, but the warmth of my friend's body catches me.

"Thanks," I mumble under my breath as he lets me go.

Thank the gods I'm wearing a short rather than a dress.

I readjust my clothes and my hoodie and follow Topper to the main house. Everything is quiet. The windows are dark, and the night only amplifies the fact that no one seems to be here.

We arrived in front of a large bay window, and I watched as topper searched for a key under a plank.

"How did you know about that?" I murmured. He turned to me and echoed, "Wheez told me how to get in."

I am still not feeling good about this, and I think it shows because Top reaches for my hand before vowing, "I'll protect you"

"I'm pretty sure I fight better than you," I say, smirking before regaining my courage and entering the silent house.

Everything is empty.

"And you say they vanished overnight?" How is it even possible to leave without anyone noticing and manage to take almost everything with you? He stays silent, so I continue with my questioning.

"And your friend did not say anything to you?"

"None of them did." His voice breaks up with emotion, he says. "Not Sarah, and not Rafe." I think I lost them both, but I won't lose Weez. "We only have each other right now."

Weird family dynamics, but okay.

I don't make any comment and follow him into the hallway, then upstairs. Arriving at the top of the stairs, I see a painting of the family, one of the only furniture that seems to have been left behind.
