What a night!

Cassie finally fell asleep next to me in one of the Pogue's constructions on the beach. The flames of the fire are the only sounds we hear, along with the constant noises of the waves. The weather is still warm, and the only ones still awake are staring at the flames, lost in their thoughts. John B's eyes are still red, and Sarah's arms are still hugging him. Kiara's eyes are closed, she's laying on J.J.'s lap, still drinking a beer.

My brain is still awake too. After tonight, I don't know how I could sleep properly. I don't dare to touch her, not wanting to wake her up. I just readjust my jacket on her shoulder, and she innocuously reaches for my hand in her sleep, holding it. I lay next to her, keeping her hand in mine.

My eyes are tired. feeling heavy as I synchronize my breathing with her pace. "It's going to be okay; everything is going to be fine," I utter slowly, watching her eyes close and her mouth slightly open. "I'll protect you." i add

Next thing I know, I drift slowly to the beautiful land of dreams, and I finally let go.

The sun is high in the sky when I wake up again. The place next to me is empty; my hand is not holding hers anymore. I rose slowly to my feet, not making any noise as I saw Sarah and Cleo still asleep a few meters away.

I make my way to the so-called living room of the beach, as Wheezie nicknamed it last night. Everyone is sitting on flooded wood branches, cooking fish and what appears to be rice.

"Now that we have everyone and some money, we can act!" Pope's features are harsh; he seems so sure of himself. "Sarah said she had some idea of where the gold could be. They are not going to keep the cross like that. "I'm sure they have a lot of money—our money somewhere." Cassie agrees next to John B. "Yeah, even in the boat, it wasn't that hard to find some. The bag was just lying here.

"Maybe it was about to be used," I intervene, "for a purchase or something." I drop next to her, our shoulders brushing against each other. She looks better than last night, and she hands me a bottle of water.

"We have to do something anyway." Kiara is playing with Weeze's hair, thinking "we can't stay here forever." "We must try something; clear John B's name and go home."

Home. My chest is heavy just thinking about it. At least with some money, I could pay the bills and maybe make things right. But what about Cassie, Sarah, and Wheezie? They don't have a home anymore.

"I don't have anywhere to go," Cassie says quietly, "and social workers are still looking for me."

"Me too!" laughs John B.
