Even with a dreamless sleep, I wake up, knowing instantly what day it is today. I used to love my birthday with my mum. The cake, the gift, and the movie night with her—it was just the two of us at home.

I've never had many friends over the years, never having the need to settle for people I knew would not be in my life forever. I've always preferred quality over quantity, and I had my mom. She was enough. I had flings and boyfriends, but never for long, and they were never important enough to meet my mom anyway.

I open my eyes, still lost in my thoughts, as I wonder if she would have liked Topper.

But now, I don't even know if Topper remembers about my birthday, and with the whole situation, I don't even know if it still matters at all. I fell asleep next to Wheezie last night, and as I opened my eyes, I noticed that she was still deeply asleep. So, as I should be because the sun is not even up yet,

But I realize that I am not alone. Topper is sitting next to me, hushing me to stay silent. I take the hand he offers me and rise to my feet, following him to wherever he is taking me.

When we distance ourselves enough from the group, I finally giggle, "Where are you taking me?"

He leads me to the other side of the beach and starts climbing on rocks.

"Oh my god, Topper! I don't know if I'm awake enough to do that."

I can't help but laugh, seeing his devilish smile as he helps me up. When we finally reach the top, I'm speechless. The sun has begun to rise, right above the sea, and the colors are wonderful.

"it's beautiful. The best sunrise I've ever seen." I can feel his gaze on me, and as I turn to him, he whispers, "Yes, beautiful."

I might be as pink as the sea because he smirks and leads me, my hand still in his, to a spot of grass facing the sea. He planned this. Wildflowers from the forest, fruits that he found on the island, and a blanket

"This is amazing! "When did you do that?"

"Last night, after everyone had gone to bed, I'm glad the timing was impeccable." I can sense the pride in his eyes as he finally lets go of my hand and we settle on the blanket.

"Why?" I muttered

"Are you serious?" He winks, adding, "You really think I would forget about your birthday?" "That sh*t is important; I mean, yours is."

Something blooms in my chest, and I need to exhale the thrill of happiness.

"No one has ever done that for me."
