Lyra Holland was sat in history class, the most boring class she has.

They learn the same information every year, learning about how the Hunger Games came about and the First Rebellion. Sometimes they show a random tape of an old game when the teacher can't be bothered teaching.

Lyra had her head down as she read an old worn poetry book that she's read so many times she could probably recite it. She'd most definitely rather read than watch whatever Hunger Games year was playing in the background.

Around her, there was a group of girls gossiping about boys beside her and a couple of boys throwing paper aeroplanes behind her.

There was a boy, Finnick Odair, who is basically the leader of the group behind her. He's also the main person the girl group talk about constantly. They're your typical popular boys, joking around and taking nothing seriously and flirting with and/or annoying all the girls in class.

Lyra sighs in irritation when a paper aeroplane lands smoothly on her desk. She recognises the handwriting instantly, he only does this every single day. On the wing is written 'open me ;)'. Jason. He's basically Finnick's sidekick.

She rolls her eyes as she peels it open to reveal the usual note, 'go out with me?' Underneath is two tickboxes, one says 'yes' and the other says 'maybe'.

Usually, she screws the paper up into a ball and throws it into the bin against the wall near her but this time she decides to mess with him back a little.

She scribbled something down on the paper, effectively making the boys' muttering behind her stop, before scrubbing it up and throwing it backwards over her shoulder without looking.

She hears a chair scrape as someone moves to catch it.

She can hear the rustle of paper as it's being unfolded, shortly followed by snickers from everyone except Jason, who scoffs as he reads the piece of paper that now has a third box underneath the 'yes, maybe' that says 'not a chance' and is ticked.

The paper is soon thrown into the bin and Jason comes to sit on her desk, looking down at her.

Lyra doesn't bother to even glance up at the teacher, she can hear his snores from her seat.

Jason smirks, obviously trying to keep his cool and rebuild his reputation.

Lyra doesn't allow him to intimidate her though as she leans back in her chair and folds her arms, raising a brow and tilting her head to the side as she gives an innocent half smile, "yes Jason?"

"You wanna rethink your answer? I'll take you someplace nice, I swear. I'm a proper gentleman." That's clearly a lie.

"No thanks. I'll stick with my first instinct," Lyra looks back down at her book. She completely ignores his presence as she reads her book.

Every now and then, she'll hear him clear his throat to gain her attention until she finally looks up again.

"If I throw a stick, will you go away?"

The boy gives in, standing from her desk and making his way back to his friends.

Lyra glanced over her shoulder with pride in her eyes as she saw Finnick teasing the boy who was shaking his head and trying to hide embarrassment, though his pink tinted cheeks spoke for themselves.

She turns round again before any of them notice her watching.

She turns her attention back to her poem book for the rest of the class.

When the lesson finally ends, Lyra shoves her book into her backpack and throws the bag on one shoulder. She's one of the first out of the door as she makes her way to the cafeteria.

She finds Annie already sat at her usual table and she's alone so Lyra goes to sit with her. The younger girl tells her about the test she'd just had, complaining about the sexist teacher she has, until three girls approach.

Lyra audibly groans causing Annie to giggle, "they're not that bad."

See, Annie Cresta is friends with the popular girls in her year. To Lyra, it makes zero sense. Annie is the sweetest and kindest girl to ever exist and she always sees the good in everyone. Unfortunately, this includes the trio of girls approaching now.

The 'leader' of the group is Florence. She's obviously gorgeous. She is rather tall and it really works in her favour, she has long tan legs and thick blonde hair that reaches her waist. She thinks she is better than everyone around her and therefore looks down on anyone she doesn't like and she's completely obsessed with boys despite only being thirteen.

Her 'sidekick' is Mavis. She has shiny black hair that hugs her ears in its bob haircut and she seems to have a permanent scowl on her face. She copies every single thing that Florence does or says. If Florence doesn't like someone, Mavis hates them. And Florence hates Lyra, so Mavis despises the redhead. Often, Lyra wonders if the girl is even capable of forming her own thoughts and opinions.

Then there's Sophie. She has fluffy brown hair that flows just past her shoulders. She's quite short in comparison to the other two girls but had a very curvy figure, especially at her hips. In the nicest way possible, or not, she is an absolute idiot. She never has any idea what anyone is talking about, which is probably why she copies everything Florence says like a broken record.

Florence pretends to be nice to Lyra in front of Annie, giving backhanded compliments here and there when she can't help it. Mavis just scowls and offers dirty looks behind Annie's back, and sometimes obviously too. Sophie just does whatever Florence does.

"You know what, I don't have the energy for this today. I'll see you later?" Lyra tells her friend before the girls reach the table.

Annie just nods before smiling innocently at her friends, unaware of the scoffs the three shared at the sight of Annie's older best friend. No matter how many times Lyra tells Annie her friends are mean girls who don't deserve her, Annie never listens.

Lyra instead makes her way out of the school cafe and up into the library. She sits in an armchair positioned in a quiet corner in the large room and pulls her book out and places it on her lap as she starts eating her lunch out of her bag to avoid the librarian catching her. Even if she did get caught, she always got away with it. It's one of the perks of reading a lot, the old librarian called Mrs Pare let's her do what she wants. Within reason.

She looks up when she hears the door open as quiet giggles enter the room. Her eyes follow the familiar Finnick Odair stroll in with a girl on his arm. She recognises the girl from the History class they were just in. They begin making out within view where she's sat, completely oblivious to her presence. She rolls her eyes as she keeps reading. I hate boys, she sighs to herself.

A few minutes later, the girl is approaching Lyra and taps her knee to get her attention.

"Hiya, if you saw that i'd, uh, i'd rather you not mention it to my boyfriend or anything," the girl scratches her neck nervously, a deep blush on her cheeks.

Finnick is long gone by now, he's like that. They all are.

"Saw what?" Lyra doesn't even look up from her book.

The girl sighs in relief, "nothing, never mind."
