Upon waking up, I'm in completely unfamiliar territory. I awake in a large hotel room/apartment, in my own little bed. From this alone, I can only assume that the dream token has worked as intended, and that I am now in Orlando.
"Morning sis! Are you excited!"
"Hehe yeah! Disney World is so cool!"
"Oh, did Mum and Dad tell you what we are doing today?"
"No, what is it?" I know, but I can't say I know. I suppose the surprise is part of the simulation.
"You'll find out soon. Now, what are you wearing to the parks today?"
"I don't know. A skirt?" Katie helps me to pick an outfit out, saying that it doesn't really matter but that a skirt will keep me cool in the sun. I dress in a white t-shirt with daisies and sunflowers all over it and a yellow skirt. I put white sandals on, which causes me to notice that my toenails have been painted pink. Maybe Katie did that before we left?
"Ugh! You're so cute, Skye! I want to be small and adorable again!"
"Aww you're cute too, big sis!" We hug as Mum and Dad come into our room.
"Hey girls! Are we ready to go for breakfast?"
"Yeah, let's go!" So we walk as the family of four that always should have been down to the café in the complex itself.
"You girls need to eat properly before today's surprise." Dad says.
"Surprise? What surprise?"
"You will find out, petal." Oh! Maybe that's where Dysphor got it from?
The waiter comes to take our order.
"Hello there, everyone and – oh, who do we have here?"
"Hi! I'm Skye!"
"Skye! Such a lovely name."
"Tell the waiter where we are going today, Skye."
"We're going to Disney World!" Aw, my own chirps warm my heart.
"Wow! Disney World! That's very exciting!"
"Yeah!"
"So what can I get you folks?"
I don't need to go into much more detail about breakfast. I do like the sensation of sitting in a big girl chair when I'm only five in this world – I immediately draw attention.
Once we step outside into the Florida sun, Dad gets a map of the parks out of his pocket and unfolds it. He puts his sunglasses on to reduce the glare from the white page. "We are looking for...what's it called again?"
"Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique."
"Ah, there it is. I'm sure we can ask any of the employees if we get lost."
Once we are through the much shorter than usual queues – I would guess the simulation has been sweetened on that front – we are greeted by Mickey and Minnie who give Katie and I stickers that read 'My First Visit!'
Mum has us pose for a photo or two with Mickey and Minnie, which I know will appear in the keepsakes. We receive a hug from both of them and then set out for the boutique.
"Hello! Do you have a booking?"
"We do indeed. Two girls for the makeovers, please."
"Are both girls looking to become princesses? We offer prince experiences too."
"Nope, both are very girly girls. Two princesses, please."
"And these must be the girls. Who do we have here?"
"I'm Katie and this is Skye."
"Hi!" That's all I wanted to say there, I guess!
"Aw how cute. Now, we have a few options for each of you. Would Mum and Dad like you both in the same room?"
"Oh yes, please. We would love to watch both become royal at the same time."
"As you wish! Let's head on through to where I will explain the process step-by-step."
We are instructed to sit in chairs in front of large mirrors, each with a stylist stood beside them. "Here we have Cindi and Bella, who are going to style you both to look like precious princesses! Once you have had your makeup done and hair styled, you can select which princess dress you would like. Depending on availability, you can match."
"I want to see my makeup first before choosing the dress." Katie speaks a lot of sense.
"Me too!"
Cindi starts brushing my hair out to be nice and straight before she twists it into a princess braid. She then sprays my hair with some special chemical.
"This is just to keep it all in place, honey."
"Oh, OK! It's smelly though!"
"Yeah, just try and hold your breath!" So for some reason I do, much to the hilarity of Mum and Dad.
"Skye, you can breathe now! She was turning red there!"
"Oh! Sorry!"
"That's alright! So, have you ever worn makeup before, Skye?"
"Um...I think my sister has put some on me before. But not much. Mummy and Daddy think I'm too young."
"Aha! We hear that a lot. But all of this stuff has been designed to be safe for kids, so no need to worry!"
Cindi puts some silver eyeshadow on my eyelids and some kid-friendly mascara. She then dots my lips with pink lip gloss and uses a small, tickly brush to blend it all in. She pops a little bit of glitter on each of my cheeks and blends it with a different, larger, softer brush and then pops a little tiara on to my head.
"There you go. A true princess in the making! Now, let's go find you a dress."
"Maybe we should wait for Katie's makeup to be done too." Dad says.
"Oh yes, of course! Bella won't be too long."
"Not at all!" Bella sings. "I just need to pop her tiara on and...there, two princesses ready for their gowns!"
Katie and I hold hands while Mum takes another photo of us, this time in full princess makeup but still in our own clothes. Then, our stylists lead us to the dress room.
"We have some great choices here. Who do you want to be?"
I pause for a moment, waiting for Ja to appear. But alas, he does not.
"We have Belle, Cinderella – my favourite, naturally – Snow White or Jasmine. Who would you like to be today?"
I'm so used to the little German demon stepping in, but I guess this is just a choice I have to make for myself. "Belle is my favourite! Belle, please!" I look over to see that Katie has chosen Cinderella.
"An excellent choice. Let's get you dressed."
Once we are in the dressing rooms with Mum accompanying us, we remove our skirts but keep our t-shirts on. I turn around to face Cindi and close my eyes as she throws the dress over my head and pulls it all the way down to where it comfortably covers my feet. But the whooshing is so addictive and fun that I keep swaying in place, with my sandals still on but no way of ever telling. Katie emerges a couple of minutes later now in her powder-blue princess gown. We both have the balloon sleeves, the puffy skirt and the tiaras – we look like proper Disney princesses!
The ladies place a sash on each of us to match our chosen princesses and we hug. Mum takes a few more photos and even a video before letting us loose out in the parks. We aren't allowed on the rides, but we really don't care. I've rarely seen Katie so happy – it's like she has always wanted a sister. She said as much when I finally came out in the boring, real world.
We go to meet all the different characters – the cherry on top is when we meet Belle and Cinderella. They pose for pictures and even dance with us for a good thirty seconds. I had no idea this sort of thing was even allowed. It might not be – this is a dream world after all.
The blue light drops into view after we finish our dinner, and dims and dims and dims until there is nothing to be seen at all. That will be the end of that.
