"Lucia wait" someone called after her.
She knew exactly who it was and slowly turned around.
"Hey Max, everything alright? You ready for the race?" she responded, acting like nothing weird had happened yesterday.
She didn't want to upset him more and the only thing she wished for, was for them to have a normal relationship, so she could calmly work alongside him.
"Yeah everything's fine and I'm actually really optimistic about the race, even though quali didn't turn out as planned. But that's not what I came to talk to you about" he said, taking a step closer to her.
Unintentionally, Max always stepped closer to her when he was talking to her.
"Look, if it's about yesterday, let's just forget it happened and move on alright?" Lucia replied and turned around to keep walking.
She wasn't in the mood to talk further about this subject and she didn't want to be the reason for him to be behind with his race preparations. He had other plans though, as he held her arm to pull her back. She turned around once more.
"I just wanted to say I'm sorry and if we could hang out again? I just feel bad and I want to make it up to you. Promise no questions about your pictures" he asked and gave her a smile at the end.
"I don't know, I really don't have the energy to fight with you anymore. Maybe we shouldn't meet up." she told him confidently, playing with her rings.
When Lucia got nervous, she always moved her hands or played with her jewelry.
"Lucia I promise." he pleaded.
Max was trying to convince himself that all this effort he was giving, was only because he wanted to piss off Charles, but in reality, he had liked talking to the brunette girl and he wanted to get to know her more.
"Alright, last chance Max." she said.
She wasn't sure if she had made the right decision, but she couldn't help but think of the way Max grew up and how terrible his father had been to him.
"As long as you promise to take some pictures of me as well" he joked, but she didn't seem very happy about it.
"I'm just kidding" he said, tapping her shoulder lightly.
Finally she gave him a little smile.
"I'm busy tomorrow though" she told him.
"Oh that's fine, I'm invited to a boat party anyways, but you can join me if you want to" Max offered her.
What if he meant the same boat party Charles invited her to? Charles had told her that more people would join them on the boat in the evening, so there was a possibility of Max being invited to the same one. She decided against asking Max about the party. She didn't want her day tomorrow to be ruined by this. Loads of people threw parties on yachts in Miami, so she was pretty certain that he was talking about another one. I mean what were the chances that they'd end up there together?
"Thanks, but I already got plans. Another time alright?" she told him.
He nodded and walked away. He was making progress now, at least she had agreed to meet him again. Now he had to find a way to drive Lucia away from Charles without interfering too much.
The race had been incredible. The whole time Lucia was taking pictures, her heart was racing and she was super excited. Max and Charles had been fighting for first place basically the entire race and the crowd was going crazy, her included.
