Max was sitting on the passenger seat of his car with the music turned up, so he wouldn't be able to hear Lucia and Lando arguing outside. It just reminded him of his parents fighting and it made him feel like he was 9 years old again, back in the Netherlands."He is your friend! He's not my responsibility okay? Get him home yourself!" Lucia yelled at Lando.
She wasn't really a person that fought much, but when she was angry, there was no turning back.
Upset was an understatement of how she was feeling.
After the whole situation with Max and Charles had escalated, Max had refused to leave, despite Lando telling him a billion times and Charles was about to leave, so Lucia wanted to follow him, talk to him, apologize to him. But Lando had stopped her. She knew Lando only meant well and he would never intentionally do something to hurt her, but right now he was complicating her life even more. He had asked Lucia to get Max home. She wasn't sure it was a good idea. She didn't know how she felt about the Dutch man and clearly Max was angry with her, so she didn't know if she felt safe with him alone either.
"He won't go if you don't tell him to. I tried before he came here and I tried just minutes before!" Lando yelled back.
Lucia took a deep breath. She looked inside the car. Max looked exhausted and wasted. Something was up with him, besides the fact that he had drank way too much.
"At least tell Charles I'm sorry and that I'll text him later okay?" she answered giving up.
Somehow, she still felt a little responsible for Max. Whether it was the fact that they worked together or that they had kissed. Lando gave her the key to the car and she walked around it to get inside.
"Where's your hotel mad Max"
His eyes finally shifted towards her. He gave her a confused expression, while going through his hair frustrated.
"mad Max?" he asked in disbelief.
"that's what the fans call you when you go insane. So I'm counting this incidence as well" she said joking, but really, she meant it.
He told her the directions to his hotel and it was a quick drive there. It was super late and Lucia was thinking about how she was going to make it to her flight in the morning. The next race was in Spain and she was super happy to finally go back home. She parked the car Max had rented for his stay in Miami in the garage of the hotel and both got out of the car to find his room. The whole car ride before had been silent.
"I know it's a lot to ask but, could you stay with me tonight?" he asked quietly, knowing what her first answer was going to be.
"Max, I honestly don't think this is a good idea"
God, he loved it when she said his name. But again, who didn't?
"Please. I don't want to be alone. I'll sleep on the couch I promise, just stay tonight"
They both got into the elevator as she grabbed Max's keycard out of his wallet to activate it. Her brain was working harder then ever. Max never talked like this to her, this vulnerable. Something was definitely up.
"Why did you talk like that to me in front of Charles?" She asked him seriously.
If she actually wanted to consider staying in his room, she needed to know whether or not he was going to go insane again and why exactly he had in the first place.
"I just, I'm sorry. I don't know. I had like, I don't even remember how many glasses of whiskey and then I was walking up to the yacht. I saw you guys, looking so you know...and tangled up in each other. It was just nothing like we had yesterday. We we're nothing compared to you and him." He said sincerely.
He first stopped talking for a second, like he was organizing his thoughts, carefully choosing what words to say next. He was still way too drunk and he was regretting that now. He didn't want to mess things up.
"I just went nuts. I can't even really tell you what I said back there. I'm sorry again. I didn't mean any of it. When I get angry I just...my mind goes blank and all I see is anger and hate around me. I'm trying to get better I am...it's just hard."
The elevator opened and they were on the fourth floor, they walked up to his room and she unlocked the door.
"Lucia?" he asked, almost whispered.
Anyone else wouldn't have been able to hear him. He was worried that she was going to leave now, but little did he know, she had already decided to stay.
"I'm staying. Just for tonight." She said while walking inside.
His eyes lighted up.
"But you're staying on the couch. If I see you moving over to me, I swear to god I will call Carlos" she warned him.
He simply nodded. He was beyond happy. He walked up to her and hugged her tightly. She was unsure on how to react to the embrace. It wasn't like she had forgotten what he had said to her.
"This doesn't mean I forgive you Max" she said with a blunt expression.
He let go of her. He slightly nodded and took his shirt of and proceeded to drink a whole bottle of water. Lucia was glad he was drinking water, but he could've done it with his shirt on, no?
"I'm going to take a quick shower okay? You can take any clothes you want from my suitcase" he told her as he unbuttoned his pants and walked into the bathroom.
Lucia had to admit, it made her think how it would feel sleeping with him. But that was probably just the alcohol still messing with her.
She picked out a big shirt and shorts out of his suitcase and quickly changed, scared he would walk out any second and see her naked. Jumping into his bed, she pulled out her phone to text Charles. He probably was done with her now.
Lucia:
Are you still awake?
Charles:
Yes. Are you with him?
Lucia:
Yes, he's in really bad shape
Charles:
of course
Lucia:
I'm sorry
Can we talk tomorrow?
Charles:
I really need to focus on the race. Maybe some other time
Lucia:
Charles please
