Got it out a bit earlier than expected, so here you go!
I also don't know much about the law, so there might be some mistakes regarding that.
As well as that I know I've been spending way too many chapters focused on the dynamic between Valerie and John so from now on I'll try and divert this story more into the plot.
Other than that hope you enjoy! :)

John didn't know what to think of Valerie much. She came off as snobby and cold towards him for the first few days but then switched to this nice persona. In the sense that she now listens to him and is more talkative. Now he knows that there isn't much of a difference, but when someone usually ignores your entire existence and then just starts to talk out of nowhere it's kind of weird.

The first time it happened they had just finished their run when Valeire just started to talk. It wasn't the most interesting conversation ever since it was about the weather, but it was the first time Valerie had ever talked to him without giving some sort of order or explanation.

After the conversation they continued with the workout and all he could think of was why she was acting this way. Like for the past week he had constantly tried to start a conversation with her and each time she would give the bare minimum answer or just ignore him. It was like talking to a brick wall. So, what changed for her to start acting this way?

He doesn't know, and he can't think of anything other than that she was either feeling off for the first few weeks or is just now warming up to him.

Well, it doesn't really matter now. He's just kind of glad there isn't anymore awkward staring competitions between each other or prolonged silence.

Right now he's focusing on some Pythagoras worksheets, getting pretty annoying though since he isn't allowed to use a calculator.  And let's just say he wasn't too thrilled when Valerie mentioned that the use of calculators were prohibited. Like bruh, using no calculator seemed more annoying than anything.

So when Valerie left he just used it, and in no time she came in and told him to hand the calculator over.

Now he has copied and used Valerie's ability many times during ability training and nothing like mind reading came through. Of course his ability isn't the best in the mental category, but he can still sense that aspect of an ability.

So, how did she know?

He can't think of any logical reason other than if it's connected to that other ability? The one that flashed up in Valerie. He didn't really have a good look at the aura so maybe it was mental ability.

But then there needs to be an explanation for how Valerie has two completely different abilities since it's impossible. Well unless your ability is designed like his, but the thing is Valeire's isn't.

He knows.

Well, more specifically his ability knows.

Whenever he copies an ability it gives off a sensation of sorts, Valeire's in a sense feels sturdy just like a shield. That aspect is associated with abilities that specialize in defense. Of course, he hasn't found anyone else that has an ability close to his, so he doesn't know what their aura feels like. But Valerie's aura is defense related, so how can she have another completely different ability to her without doing something with her initial ability?

...

Well the thing is he doesn't know. Maybe in the future something will explain it, but thinking about it is useless especially since he only saw a flicker of that ability. And maybe Valerie wasn't even using an ability when she caught him, maybe it was just pure luck.

...

Uh, this is so complicated. Guess boredom makes him latch onto anything with a slither of interest. It feels like he is some detective solving a murder or something. Stringing together stuff and making huge ass guesses. Not just about Valerie but Dad as well.
