If I had to guess, Sam probably has some crazy shit like jet or rocket fuel to allow him to shoot out his sword with enough force to punch a cyborg into the air, as well as to keep up with him in his gear.
In front of me is my best friend forever, Honed Edge, and a whole bunch of metal. There is also some gunpowder and some rubber covered wheels I made.
Well, let's try the thing I have the least expectations for first.
I start by turning honed edge into the shape of a katana. Then, I grab some metal, and turn it into the shape I remember Sam's sheathe being in.
Yes, that's good! I like that! Anyways, slot in the wheels, hook up various circuitry, and I'm now realizing there's absolutely not enough power in this, I don't want to think about the scale of battery I'd have to use.
Well that's a no go, I guess it's time for the fun part.
I touch the sheathe and the wheels fall through. I then position an ignitor connected to the trigger on the blade. Next, set up a compartment for the gunpowder. And there we go, gun sword, well, not in the "traditional" sense. I press the trigger, igniting the gunpowder, and the resulting pressure build up from explosion allows for the blade to shoot out. Still, I think it could be faster.
Time to try the rail-gun-sword. I exhaust myself on the first attempt, and magnets shoot everywhere, I'm told one even hit me in the head, couldn't tell ya what happened, pretty sure I got knocked out, got a concussion. I awoke probably a day later, restrained by Akame's iron grip in bed. Took some convincing to get her to let me test some more.
I eventually reached a new conceptual idea. Figuring that if I could permanently change the texture of metal, I could probably do something similar to programming. Thus, I envisioned a circuit board to be completed with the press of a trigger. I then run a finger along the bottom of the sheath, envisioning it as the first place where polarity would change to push the blade all whilst also drawing on the feel of controlling metal. I then repeat the process as I make my way up the sheath.
Well, test number 1 I guess.
I pull the trigger ready to catch it. I unfortunately forgot how rail guns are self destructive in their scale. The sheath explodes as I am hit with shrapnel and the sword shoots into a wall hilt-first. It shoots through, well it doesn't lack in power I guess. Gravity takes over as I'm tired from using my teigu so precisely and from being in close proximity to an accidental explosion.
Well, owwww, also, gotta compress some more metal for this, make it stronger, I really forgot about the sheer power of a rail gun.
Me: "Hey! Can someone help me?"
I pass out and am later awoken by Akame.
Akame poking my check gently: "How did you mess up this time?"
Me: "I forgot the destructiveness of modern technology."
Akame: "Well, first things first, we didn't remove some of the small bits of metal because you'd be better at that, but we got rid of the bigger stuff, you're stable but you probably feel the stabbing pains here."
She pokes my side as I cringe in pain.
Akame: "Here."
She pokes another spot.
Akame: "Here."
Once again.
Akame: "He-"
I catch her finger before she can poke me again.
Me: "I get it, I'm sorry, I'll wear my armor when I'm testing, please, one more time."
Akame pokes my side a bit harder this time.
Me: "OWWW, you know I meant another chance."
Akame: "Yep, but I thought it would be funny."
Me: "Well maybe a little bit."
Akame smiles slightly: "Fine, but if you're injured again, you won't be leaving the bed for at least a week."
Me uncertain: "Don't tempt me with a good time?"
Akame stands up and walks towards the exit, hips swaying, and leaves after showing a mischievous smile.
I then begin the painstaking process of melting the metal then removing it. The liquid flows out with relative ease, so it wasn't too painful, and I learned to essentially sense the metal in myself, which is also cool.
Gotta get it right this time.
I went back to my forge, cleaned up the blood and the metal. Then I went looking for my sword.
It was still in one piece luckily, just buried in the ground quite thoroughly. With a bit of digging, I had my sword back, and then some severe vibration cleaned it off.
I remake the sheath, although a bit bulkier and with a lot more metal compressed into it. Finally though, I manage to catch the blade.
(Well, I feel like it's implied that Raiden is not here. Also, no: the insert is not Jetstream Sam, unless you decided to name him that, in that case, yes: he is)
Me inspecting the sword: "Eh, imitation, 4-star gacha rarity. Based on how it felt when it injured me, I'd give it a 50% crit rate though."
So, yeah, this was originally going to be in a book called steel shorts, but I realized I could just release it alongside a full chapter, and here we are. By the way, the sword wasn't brought in this form to not rouse questions. I will probably include chapters like these throughout the book for original stuff. Hope you enjoyed ~900 Words 1/14/23
