Palette glanced up at Dream. In all his 18 years of existence, he didn't think he had ever seen his dad so mad in his entire life. Imagine that, the Guardian of positivity… mad.
It was a rage you would never dream of seeing. Silent, nagging but absolutely terrifying. A gentle kind of fury. And, he had caused that.
Dream, surprisingly, didn't seem to have any trouble teleporting to Goth; it seemed he wasn't in as much trouble as Dream presumed. Palette looked up, they were surrounded in a beautiful forest.
"Alright.. Reaper and Lady Life have been kind enough to watch you while.. While we think." We, being Ink and Dream obviously. Palette nodded.
"Don't consider this a fun little play date between you and your friend either, you're both in massive trouble." Dream scolded, Palette nodded shamefully again. Although.. Lady life..
That woman reminded him of someone…
Was Palette a little old to be babysat? Yeah. But in Dream's defense, Palette did lie to everyone, run off with Broomie, disappear to who knows where, only alerting Dream of his position when he was being crushed to death by the one thing Dream tried to keep him safe from.
As the pair walked through the wonderful forest, a shadow of white surprised Palette.
"Goth?"
He turned, his face practically lighting up when he saw the other.
"Palette!" Goth smiled, the reaper's cold stare was always replaced by a warm smile whenever the other was around.
"What are you doing here?" Goth smiled, glancing over at Dream. The young skeleton tensed slightly at the Guardian's expectant expression towards his son.
"Ahh.. I'm in trouble. Apparently your dad and Ms Life have been.. Kind enough.. To make sure I don't do anything dumb." Palette cleared his throat awkwardly. Silence sat upon the three before Goth nodded.
"Well.. Toriel is just around this way, follow me." Goth slowly took Palette's hand, hesitating for just a moment before guiding the other.
".. Jeez, Pal. I've never seen your dad so cold." Goth whispered as the pair slowly gained distance from the frustrated dad.
"Yeah I know right? I feel awful. I had no idea he could get so angry in the first place." Palette whispered back as he turned past a few trees, before coming face to face with a goddess of natural light.
"Oh! Goth, you've brought a friend." Life smiled. This woman was ethereal.. a lifely glow to her soft, cream coloured fur; her eyes were a vibrant persian colour with the gentle warmth of a fire. Palette's shoulders felt even heavier. She looked similar to Nim. Maybe, they could have been friends.
"Palette Roller, ma'am." The teenager nodded, he felt a strange sense to bow.. Or something!..
"Ah! You're the troublemaker, right." Life stood up, a playfully stern look on her face. "Mr Dream didn't tell me exactly what you two did, my children, but it must've been bad. So, it's my job to teach the pair of you a lesson." The goddess goat was incredibly tall, her figure was looming over the two.
"Wasn't Mr Reaper supposed to join us?" Palette tilted his head slightly. Goth winced slightly, rubbing his sleeve.
"There's.. Never a guarantee that dad is actually going to show up.. Reaper business." Goth muttered, looking away. Palette's face softened. Of course, best not to question.
"So, what are you going to have us do Tori?" Goth asked quietly, changing be subject.
Toriel.. Or Lady Life, clasped her mighty hands together..
[...]
The chores weren't anything too heavy; Just a bunch of weed pulling and cleaning, typical yard stuff. Palette couldn't help but feel as if he got let off pretty lightly. Although this wasn't even including what Dream had planned for him.
This wasn't supposed to be fun… but, Goth always made things fun for Palette. The pair laughed and played as they got the chores done. They were currently playing tag, trying to see if Goth could avoid Palette's touch while picking up as many sticks as they could. It was never the other way around. Not after what happened with Goth's accidental death touch.
The chase was on, Goth hovered over a bush while Palette had to jump over it. The reaper flew past trees as Palette carried the heavy sticks.. Consider this their training.
But, Goth skidded to a stop when they found a dark figure in the forest. Palette trotted after them, only to look up at the similar shadowy figure in the forest.
".. Dad!" Goth's excitement was barely containable as he hugged Death. Reaper smiled and hugged his child back.
"Aren't you supposed to be in trouble? What are you two doing?" Reaper joked, Palette held up the sticks.
"Cleaning duty." Palette smiled awkwardly. The Skele-god's lazy grin widened slightly at the sight of the young one.
"Palette. Good to see you alive." Death teased. The youngling responded with a sheepish smile, glancing towards the ground.
"Alive?.. What do.." Goth questioned slightly, his singular pupil doting towards Palette.
Did.. Goth not know?
Would it be better to keep it that way?
Would it be better to lie?...
"Ah nothing to worry about Gothy. Just a little inside joke between me and Mr Reaper." Palette smiled brightly, although.. Goth didn't look too convinced.
".. Right." Goth mumbled, still looking towards Palette. The gentle breeze of Life's garden blew past the three, the teammates scarves blowing gently.
"Well. I just came by to say hello to Life, of course. I'm sure she's just dying to see me again." The father and son pulled away finally. Goth nodded.
"I'll let her know that you're here!" Goth smiled. "Let's go Palette!"
"Uh-uh. Palette and I have a conversation to have.. Guardian stuff." Reaper's cloak blew gently in the breeze. Palette gulped..
"Oh.. Uh. Sure, I'll be back with Tori then." Goth muttered, glancing between Palette and Death. The hatted skeleton stood awkwardly, still holding the sticks.
Once Goth walked upwards to go find Toriel, the god and the demi-god were left alone.
"Palette." Reaper started.
".. Mr Reaper." Palette replied, trying not to seem too nervous. It's not very often the god of Death asks you to stick around.
"You know, my job isn't to babysit. So I'm going to give you one opportunity." Reaper pulled out his scythe with a mighty slash. Palette leapt back. Holy shit!?
"I'll take you back to Dreamtale so you can do what you need to do, partly because it's none of my business what you've done; but from what I saw? You've got some unfinished business and believe me. There is nothing worse than unfinished business." A mischievous smile on Reaper's face. The teenager blinked in disbelief..
Was Reaper seriously saying this?
So many questions swirled around Palette's mind.
