No One Special Yet

"So? Is he the one?" Queen Odalia asked her daughter as yet another young royal left the palace. Hoof-trots slowly faded as the chariot of the prince got farther and farther into the distance.

Obviously not, Amity thought. No one was. At least, not yet. Sure, some were charming... but that trait often came with boasting about appearances and strength, courage and wisdom. Amity found that quite annoying. Honestly, who wouldn't?

"I don't think so," Amity replied bluntly, to which the queen scowled. "Seriously? We've been doing this for years, Prince after Princess after Prince after--oh, you get the idea. You're being so obnoxiously picky, why not just pick one? We're running out of time. If you can't choose a partner soon, I will for you."

"But--" Amity cut herself off as soon as she saw the look on Odalia's face. "Yes, mother, I--I'm sorry for being fickle."

"Good. Now go up to your room, clean yourself off. We will call you down when dinner is ready," she said, nodding to her husband. The king, Alador, who had been silent the whole time, looked up after sensing his wife's icy gaze. "O-oh, yes, I'll get the chefs to start on something.." with that, he hurried toward the kitchen.

Amity sighed and started upstairs toward her bedroom. When she arrived there, she took off all of her jewelry and set it on the dresser for someone else to clean up later. She then went off to the bathing chambers to clean herself, per her mother's request. When she had finished, she donned a suitable outfit for dinner and carefully sat down in a chair to think before suppertime.

Why all the pressure? Must I really choose someone this soon? I think I'm much too young, and I want to marry for love, not just because mother told me so. Of course, I'd never say that to her face.. she pouted, and then her head turned to look at her collection of books. As always, her favorite series caught her eye: The Good Witch Azura. The books were so captivating, words full of magic and wisdom and even romance--she was on book four by now, she knew that Azura and Hecate weren't enemies anymore, but she suspected they might be something even more than friends. She was about to dive deeper into her thoughts when her mother called her down for dinner. "Coming!" she cried, heading down the steps and leaving Azura--and all her thoughts about her mother--staring through the open doorway.

Luz Noceda threw her broom into the closet and yelled, "Mamá, I finished sweeping! I'm going out now!" "Alright, stay safe, cariño!" Camila replied. Hearing her mother's response, Luz grabbed her sketchbook and raced outside. Hmm, where shall I go today? She thought with a smile. She wandered for a while until she saw a little field filled with tiny flowers. Oh, I know, she thought, I'll just do what I always do!

Luz began to pick tiny wildflowers, in shades ranging from royal blues to soft purples. Then she carefully weaved the emerald-colored stems until she had a tiny ring of plants, which she placed onto her head. She smiled, proud of her work. She would add this to her collection, even if some of them were starting to shrivel a bit. Then she sat on a conveniently-placed rock, opened her sketchbook, and started to doodle.

Luz had planned to draw the field in front of her, but she got distracted and started to sketch characters from her favorite book series, The Good Witch Azura. Sure, she enjoyed other books (specifically ones about witches, magical creatures, and love), but Azura always had a special place in her heart. She was glad that the witch had lately befriended her former rival, Hecate. Azura had a way of making friends. Maybe I could do that, too, Luz thought, if there were more people living around here. But Luz was okay--more than okay--with her current living situation. She loved the forest. One of her talents was being able to sit so perfectly still, woodland creatures would come and sit on her! When they did, she would tell stories to them or whisper them her secrets, if they weren't scared away by the noise. Sunset arrived quickly. Glowing purples and neon pinks painted the sky, complimenting the now-orange sun. Luz quickly pick up her things--flower crown included--and set off toward her house.

"Mamá?" Luz called to her mother as she entered, but she was met with no reply. She instinctively walked further into the room, and was met with a note:

      Hola, mija!

Fui a buscar algunos suministros para la cena. Volveré muy pronto. ¡Hasta entonces!

Amo a mi,

 Mami

(Translation: Hello, darling! I went to get some supplies for dinner. I'll be back very soon. See you then! Love, Mom)

"Alright," muttered Luz. She went upstairs to pass the time, reading, sketching, and writing her own little stories.. she would've made them longer and more detailed, but she just had so many ideas!

A little while later, Camila arrived at the house. "Luz? I'm home! I brought food!" Luz bounded downstairs, excited for dinner.. but also to converse with her mother. "Hola, Mami!" she said with a grin, sitting down at the table. Food was set onto the tablecloth, the small family chatted, and the meal was eaten. When Luz had set her plate away to later be cleaned, she looked out the window. The purple-and-pink hues from the earlier sky were fading away, and replaced with a deep blue, flecked with tiny glowing stars. "The sky looks beautiful tonight.." the girl murmered, and her mother heard her, and nodded in agreement. "Sí, es encantador. La noche es mágica en su máxima expresión."

(Translation: Yes, it's enchanting. The night is magical at its best.)

Shortly after, Luz excused herself to go up to her room. Her mother was right, the night sky could be truly beautiful. Anything could be up there. She had so many new ideas for characters! The night sky folded up her worries, her hopes, her dreams, her secrets, and tucked them gently into its silent, dark presence. It was.. calming. She stared out the window of her little house, up at the sky. Little did Luz know, someone else was staring at the sky, too. Someone she would soon meet.

(A/N: Hi, everybody! This is the FIRST chapter of my FIRST story! Wow!! Am I supposed to be this excited?? I don't know. I love Lumity so much and I really wanted to right about it. A basic synopsis of the events in this tale came to me one night, and I'm slowly putting the pieces together. Bare with me. If this is boring or uneventful, feel free to let me know (..preferably in a polite way, please!), and I'll try to answer any questions..but otherwise, I'll continue to try to update as much as I can. My goal is to have at least a thousand words per chapter. Anyway, I guess that's all for this update, but I hope to see you again soon! Bye, witchlings!! <3)
