A Spanish Mid-Summers Knight

The characters and plot in this story are all mine except Deigo de Deza, who was an actual grand inquisitor during the Spanish Inquisition, if you want to use them, please ask me first.

Once upon a time there was a young boy called Thomas. Living in Spain, he aspired to be a knight in a far off country. To do so he spent many years training in secret with his father, Pedro, who was an undercover knight from this distant country, which was none other than England.

He was a retired knight was never able to accomplish his mission in Spain due to the inquisition and falling in love with a beautiful Spanish maiden.

Thomas was a great student and a very quick learner, equipped with a great passion, but they had to be very careful as the grand inquisitor Diego de Deza came around weekly at random to check if any treason had been committed.

Learning knight skills and English was considered treason in this country, and if caught practicing such, you could be put into slavery or even worse... Lets just say you would vanish without a trace.

One mid-summers day Thomas was training with his father when he heard a knock on the door. Quickly they stashed away their training supplies and nervously opened the door.

Pedro as politely and calmly as possible said: “Grand Inquisitor Diego De Deza, what is such an occasion we have been in your presence twice this week?” ( they are speaking in spanish)

“A little birdie has alerted the royal court that someone in your household speaks a foriegn language”.
“Of course not, honorable inquisitor, what brought on such an idea.”

His father’s voice spoke confidently but you could hear a slight crack in it.
“If you truly have nothing to hide, you won’t mind if you search your house?” “YOU CAN’T!” Thomas burst out in english.

“Uh - NO PUEDES!” ( back in spanish) “Ah it seems we have found the traitor” . Pedro also confessed he spoke English to the inquisitor to try to take Thomas’ place but it was hopeless. Their discovery was astonishing to all people who lived in Spain as they used to admire Pedro, but now his family was to be shamed.

The family had no idea that anyone knew about it and wondered how their secret got out. Now they were disgraced and would have to face the royal court.
Pedro, on the other hand knew the day would come. It was inevitable.

He had told his son to run away but they were taken captive and guarded in the castle dungeons until time for the trial. And these days, those who went to a trial… never came out.

Pedro knew that it was hopeless for him, his punishment would obviously be execution but he would plead for his son and wife.

In court Thomas worried about his father. He did not try to plead for his own freedom, but instead for his sons. Thomas’ mother had been let free of any charge as she couldn’t speak English so there was no viable reason to punish her, but Thomas was just starting to understand that his father had no escape.

As his father was sent off to the thumbscrew to start his time in torture he told Thomas:

“Be brave and be a true knight.”

With that he was gone..
Luckily Pedro's beseeching paid off and Thomas had a less severe consequence; he was banished.

Royal guards were supposed to escort him to the border at dawn but Thomas had a different idea.

It was risky, but he would do it, in memory of his father, in memory of the things he loved.
