As the day of talent show slowly krept closer,KKate and Charlie worked vigorously on puttthe finishing touches on their acts.On the day-night of the talent show, Kate and Charlie carefully grabbed their equipment loaded them into her mom's car. Then they drove off. As they drove through town( passing the illuminated buildings and sidewalks) Charlie's heart started to beat very fast like a basketball player before a big game. He didn't know why but for some reason the boy felt nervous about making a mistake during his performance and getting laughed at by a bunch of total strangers. Even though he did it at home, he at least felt comfortable since he knew alot more people.Arriving at a tall illuminated rectangle of a blue brick building with the words '' The Laughing Deck Performing Arts Building '' painted on it in a fancy font. Hopping out of the car, Charlie, Kate, and her mom carried their supplies to the building's right side door that led to the backstage room. . Then they went inside and sat everything neatly on the floor. Since they were all set, Kate's mom wished the two of them good luck and then headed toward the right-hand side wall that led to the audience seats. Looking around, Charlie and Kate stood in amazement at all the cool acts. There were mimes, jugglers, and even clowns. Two of the jugglers they saw looked very familiar. They both had wavy blonde hair and blue eyes. Thinking about it, the boy then realized that they looked exactly like the Ruffas and Bud Keaton who were picking on the group of kids when he first arrived in Kanesville.
Only however, they were both wearing glasses. Spotting them out of the corner their eyes, the two boys suddenly started to approach them. One of them was holding what looked like a cube container filled with cookies. Reaching them, the boys then introduced themselves, their names were Bernard and Richard Daniels. After Kate and Charlie had introduced themselves to the twins, Richard told them they were doing a juggling act. After Charlie and Kate told the two boys their names, the two twins offered them a cookie. Since Kate wasnt a big fan of cookies she declined the genorous offer while Charlie grabbed one and ate it. When the show began the audience lights dimmed and a man in a black and white suit came onto the stage. After introducing the show, he then called the first performer onto the stage who was a magician named Matt Hawkins
During some of the acts, Charlie would peek through the curtain a little bit to get a better look at the performers and their talents. Sitting in the first row of chairs( with desks), he saw 4 judges who each held a marker in their hands. Observing some of the acts the boy noticed a few of the performers start to mess up their performance halfway through. "What was happening?" he wondered. Watching all the amazing acts, the boy saw one that really blew him away. It was a stand-up comedy performance by a boy who looked close to Charlie or Kate's age. He had blonde hair, and blue eyes, and wore khakis and a red, blue, and green checkered shirt. Listening to him tell his hilarious jokes, Charlie couldn't help himself and had to laugh. Luckily though, he was able to hold it in. Looking at her friend (as he watched the comedian), Kate then walked up to Charlie and told him that the boy's name was Wallie Weisterman and that he was the town's comedian. Then she informed him how every once in a while he would have a comedy show in the building. She added that he always performed his comedic bits at the talent show and every year prior to Queen Olivia's reign he would win . Hearing his Jokes Charlie could easily start to see why he was such a star.
Listening to him was like watching Jerry Seinfeld on "Seinfeld". Thinking about him and Kates plan , he thought that his funny personality could really help as a great distraction device.
Before Kate went on stage, Charlie gave her a hug and wished her good luck. Once she started singing the girl sounded like she was on a roll untill suddenly he heard her sltop a start to panic. Quickly Charlie jumped to the rescue and began coaching her through some breathing techniques.Once she seemed better he tried to convince her to continue singing her song, but instead she retreated back into the curtain.Trying to fill the loud uncomfortable silence, Charlie started singing Kates song and he learned that night to stick with art. However, hearing his terendouse voice and watching the audience slowly dispearse convinced Kate to cone back and save her best friend like he had saved her. After she she finished her act Kate got a big standing ovation.Once she arrived backstage Charlie told Kate "great job", and they exchanged big hugs to each other. As the boys turn finally drew near Charlie quickly walked over to grab his materials. As he noticed his body start to tingle and shake.Luckily though they all vanished one he walked put on to the stage,or so he thought anyway. It was their turn, Charlie and Kate Walked over to grab their materials and then made their items way onto the stage. Halfway through through concocting his Charlie felt his hand start to grow weaker, and he started to lose control of the paintbrush. He tried his best to grip it tightly and continue painting, but instead, when he placed the brush on the canvas it skidded from side to side. The same thing happened to Kate and she had no idea what to do. When they were done, the judges looked at their paintings, and then they all gave him a big fat 0 on a piece of paper. Returning backstage,Charlie found Kate who congratulated him and watched the rest of the acts.As he watched, he noticed something strange.Everyone who perfomee hbegan to weirly shake like he had and had a fantastic performance untill they messed up at the end. Then Charlie suddenly started to feel really sick and had to make a quick dash for the restroom which stretched a mile long with previous performers who also looked very sick. Once the last performance was done, they stayed on stage, and all the other performers then walked onto the stage so that the announcer could announce the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners and give out medals. After talking it over with the judges, the announcer then declared the third-place winner was Matt Hawkins with his magic tricks. In second place surprisingly was Wallie and his comedy performance and last but not least in 1st place were Benjamin and Richard Daniels with their juggling act. With the show over, Kate and Charlie walked off the stage and searched for their mom om in the audience. Finding her, the three of them left the building and then hopped in the car and drove home. That night Charlie thought about the Carnival and about how all the performers were getting sick. All the performers that is except for Benjamin and Richard Daniels.Thinking back to when Kate and him had met them and got offered the cookies, Charlie started to wonder if maybe they had put something in the cookies to sabatoge the performers and cause them to all get sick.
