Chapter 34
Witches.
It was a known fact that witches lived among us. I believed in witchcraft and I had read a thousand stories about witches being present between us, casting spells, doing magic—most of it black and harming people, but I hadn't ever encountered with one.
"What about witches?" I leaned forward to Faye, my brows collected as I questioned her. The fear washed away and curiosity settled inside me. "Are they real? Do you know any?"
"A couple. Though, in our world, witches are a threat to us. They perform magic to control us, sometimes to even kill us. We fear witches and whoever practices witchcraft." She explained to me with horror in her eyes.
Oh...
"Are they any here?"
She shook her head, "There is one, but asides from that, we forbid witches to enter the city. Any witch found entering is killed at the spot, if possible, or else they are managed in different ways. That depends on the Alpha." She fluttered in her hand in the air and sighed.
The Alpha.
Christopher.
How could I not be surprised? His show of strength and power only meant one thing, that he was always in control. In the back of my head, I knew he was a part of something big, maybe a gang but I didn't know that he ruled a whole city, the city I had been born in and I had been living in for years.
How could no one know? How could I not know?
"What did you say about the underground tunnels?" I turned my attention back to Faye who didn't hesitate to any further questions I had for and they were still a lot.
"The tunnels were made long before. They were made for werewolves to pass around in the city without catching attention of the humans. It's also like a safe place for us werewolves to stay if we are ever in danger. The tunnels aren't known to any human here." She paused, taking a breath. Telling everything to me meant threatening herself. Faye was taking a risk. "The tunnels are located underneath the subways—"
"The subways?" I cocked a brow, my mind went back to the day where I found Christopher taking a life of an older man inside the subway. "How is it possible?"
"At every station, there is a technical room that leads into the tunnels which then will take you to a whole new world."
My lips parted and my jaw hug. Secret tunnels. I was intrigued, maybe even more than that. I began to wonder if that was the reason why Christopher was there in the station that night. He didn't seem like a man who'd take the subway anywhere.
It made sense now.
"Wow. Can anyone go there?" I asked Faye with a hint of excitement in my voice. The worry subsided. I was curious to how there were tunnels under the city that no one knew about.
"No, only werewolves, Bek." She shook her head and then laughed, "Though, if you want, I can take you."
"Please. How is it like?"
"It's a like whole underground city. You'd love it." Faye hopped up from the bed and headed to the table to grab her phone. Her eyes were glued on the screen before she spoke, "There is party on Halloween and it's going to be a blast. I can sneak you in if you want?"
I drew my lip into my mouth and bit it. My nerves were quivering at the same time while I was growing excited. I wanted to go but I had to go with Rose, for her high-school Halloween party. I couldn't be at two places at the same time. And did I want to be surrounded by werewolves?
I just learned about them today. It could get overwhelming for me.
"What time is the party starting?" I asked her.
"It's starting at ten, ends by sunrise." Faye read from her phone and said before tucking it away. "You should come. The parties held underground are—mind-blowing. Drugs, alcohol, money, everything and people are wild. You'd enjoy it so much. Plus, you haven't been at a party in a while." She suggested, a smile spread over her face as she waited for me to agree with her.
God, I wanted to go.
But there was a bit of uncertainty inside me. What if something wrong happened? What if another werewolf like Christopher began chasing me?
"I'll come. But, I need to be at Rose' high-school party first! Hers is at seven so I'll be done in no time and then we can go together and you can show me everything!" I exclaimed with thrill dancing in my core as I imagined it all.
I couldn't wait.
"Oh, that's amazing. Yay!" She threw her hands in the air. "I promise, you'll love it all."
"But wait—" I stopped her. A scowl spread on my face. "Isn't there going to be a problem if I, a human, comes?"
"Oh, silly, there isn't going to be any problem. You're the Alpha's destined mate. No one can touch you, except for him, of course." She replied. "The only thing you need to worry about is what you're going to wear."
Huh?
I pursed my mouth and looked away while understanding what she had meant. It took me a moment but then I understood it. All of it.
