Chapter 61

Rebekah

"Why do you keep running away as if I'm going to do something terrible to you?" Christopher asked as he looped his arm around my waist and pulled me closer to him. "Haven't you missed me even a bit?" His finger traced the side of my cheek, close to my hairline.

I shuddered in complete fear and my heart raced. "I did—I do." I nodded. It was the truth. I did miss him, and I wondered where he had been all these days. "I just thought you were busy. I didn't think you were with the witches. Why were you with them? Did they offer an exchange?" My brows furrowed as the questions fell from my mouth by themselves.

The corner of his mouth curled into a smile. His eyes raced over my face, gleaming from within as if this was something to enjoy. "Your life for mine?" He cupped my face and his arm tightened around me. "Yes, they did offer me that. Of course, I couldn't let any harm come to you."

"Are you okay?"

"Do you believe I'm not?"

"I don't know. Pietro told me—" I wanted to tell him about the countless thoughts running in my head but before I could, he cut me off.

A frown appeared on his face. "Pietro says a lot of things. Since when did you start listening to him? He's full of shit." He paused to take a breath and unwrap his arm from me. "Nothing happened. I had been occupied by the witches for the past week and that's all I can tell you. They gave me what I wanted, and I'll give them what they need. Asides from that, don't be concerned because that's the last thing I want for you."

"But—"

Christopher placed his finger over my mouth, silencing me before I could question anything at all. "I don't want to talk about anything. You're well and alive, so am I. I don't see a problem here. Don't make one."

"I don't want to."

"Good." He heaved in a breath and turned, heading toward the washroom. "Go home. I've things to finish," he abruptly said before slamming the door behind him.

There was a storm twirling above him when he spoke, and he couldn't see it himself. I froze where I stood, and my heart continued to thud deeply in my chest. Pietro fled for a reason. There was something wrong. Why couldn't Christopher see it? He was different in every way. Had he lost his humanity? Was he going to turn back into the cruel monster he once was?

I left the bedroom when I heard the shower running. He didn't want to tell me anything and clearly, something was wrong. Taking the stairs, I headed down and searched for Michael. Pietro was long gone and there was no one else here asides from the servants.

"Michael." I knocked on the door of his room or at least where I last remembered he stayed. "Are you inside?" I whispered, knocking again, but there was no response.

I pursed my lips and wrapped my hand around the doorknob. It was open. The door slightly creaked as I opened it and looked inside. My mouth went dry when I found Michael standing near the window, hands spread and his eyes completely gray. There was no color within them.

My heart began beating fast at the sight of him. It was terrifying but at the same time, I knew he was trying to do something.

Complete silence crept into my ears, and I shuddered while reaching closer to him. He was in a deep trance, frozen in place. I couldn't hear the sound of his breathing, but his burnt fingers twitched every few seconds while he remained absent.

It took him a moment before he snapped into reality and breathed heavily. His eyes changed color, returning to the shade of dark brown and meeting mine.

"What did you see?" I questioned him, knowing he had the answer.

"A wolf—the Alpha's wolf," he responded, his voice shaking in fear. "It controls him now. The curse is broken. The witches didn't do anything to him asides from feeding and mending his wolf as he returned to surface. That's why they wanted him. They knew the curse had been broken when they saw the mark on you."

"What do they plan on doing? It must be something. The woman, Selene, she spoke about a ritual they were doing and they took my blood for it. You must know what the ritual is about." I eyed him with curiosity while fiddling with my fingers and recalling last week with the witches.

If only I hadn't left...

"Something. I can't tell—I don't know about it. There are only a few things I can sense and understand. This was all." He walked away from the window where the blazing sun fell over his face.

I turned as he did and watched the dust particles feather through in front of the bright rays. Even more dust flew as he walked. The wood underneath him creaked. I caught a glimpse of the room, the large bookshelf and the old furniture, along with the essence of witchcraft and herbs that flooded through my nostrils.

"It's going to get worse from here, isn't it?" I asked, my words trembling.

"It could." He neared the shelf besides the bookshelf and lit a candle. The room lit even more. "The Alpha has to be in control of himself and his wolf. Selene wouldn't dare curse him again as she finds him beneficial with his wolf. Without the curse, the Alpha will remain violent."

"What can I do?"

Michael shrugged with an idle expression on his face. "I don't know, Rebekah."

"Can't you take his wolf? Like the same way the witches had done it before?" There had to be a way around this.

Michael was a witch, just like Selene and the other one. If they could curse him, he could as well. He could take away his wolf, let Christopher be in control of himself. It would stop all of this.

He laughed at my suggestion and turned to me while shaking his head. "I cannot defy him, not even if he himself wants me to."

I groaned and ran my fingers through my partly wet hair. Gathering air in my lungs, I let out another long sigh while my body grew tight with tension and sore from Christopher's wrath he had displayed earlier, in bed.

"But I can and I'm certainly going to." My lips twisted in rage, and I headed to the door to face him again.

I wasn't afraid of him.

"I wouldn't advise you to, Rebekah." I heard Michael behind me but ignored him while leaving the room.

Just as I did, he began following me while uncertain noises filled the silence inside the house. My brows furrowed in confusion. Was somebody here? I was unsure. Before Christopher left for a shower, he told me had things to take care of.

I followed the voices into the large seating area across the hall and close to the dining area. The doors were closed, yet some voices from inside fled and echoed through the house.

"Don't go inside." Michael stopped in front of me, blocking the door.

"Why not?"

Fear flashed over his face and his eyes turned light once more. "You don't want to."

"I certainly do."

I walked past him and thrust open the door to confront Christopher and force him back to being the man he was a week ago but to my surprise, my gaze collided with the female witch that had kidnapped me.

Selene.
