This is from Broadchurch if anyone isn't aware or interested <3 it's short but sweet so enjoy
Silently locking the door behind you, you kicked off your shoes into the corner, Alec's normal work ones already there. Tip-toeing through the house, not wanting to disturb anyone, you made your way to the bathroom, going about your nightly routine before slinking open the door to your shared bedroom, noticing Alec already below the covers.
A soft smile grew on your face before you noticed the subtle turns and twitches coming from the Detective Inspector.
"Not again," you muttered, your heart breaking a little more each and every time you had to witness the inner turmoil come out and make itself known.
Small grunts and pants left the detective's lips, a frown contorted on his bearded face as his eyes twitched rhythmically.
Getting into your side of the bed, you reached over, gently shaking the man's shoulders, wanting to wake him from the dream.
It failed, the motions and small subtle noises continuing on.
"Alec," you whispered, your voice barely audible, your hand shaking his shoulder rougher than before, "Alec, please wake up."
Worried that something was wrong or could go wrong, especially with his heart condition, you tried again, a groan leaving his lips as he slowly opened his eyes.
"Y/N?" His voice laced with tiredness and a tad bit of anger that was very visible but seemed to go away once he realized it was you.
"I'm back from work, love," you told him, pushing a strand of stray hair out of his face, "I had to finish a story, it was due by midnight."
Alec nodded, his eyes beginning to close again as he spoke, "I had another one, didn't I?"
"Yes," you frowned, moving in the bed so his head could lie against your chest.
You could feel his labored breaths against, small hiccups barely noticeable, as tears brimmed on his eyes.
"Alec, love," you kissed his forehead, running a hand through his knotted hair messed up from sleeping, "It's okay to cry. I'm here if you need me."
Silent tears were shed, as you whispered soft words trying your best to soothe the crying Detective Inspector.
"Do you want to talk about it?" That was the question that was always a gamble, sometimes he would, other times he wouldn't.
Alec nodded, the tears almost coming to an end. "It was about Daisy and you."
You immediately knew what it was, a recurring one. The same nightmare over and over that what happened in the Danny Latimer case happened to Daisy, and then you, you were miserable and left Alec all alone.
"Alec," rubbing his hand as you gripped it tightly with your own, "I'm here, you can call Daisy if you need too, but I know she's all right. Everything is fine."
"I'm fine," he sighed, digging deeper into his pillow as his grip on the sheets tightened.
You hated to see him cry, tear stains on his cheeks, wetness covering the pillow. He looked like Hell but it didn't matter, nothing mattered when it came to him because in the end it was just the grumpy Scottish man you'd chosen to be with through thick and thin.
"Do you want me to stay up with you?" Knowing he wouldn't be going back to sleep tonight and would likely be going into work early.
Alec hesitated before shaking his head no, but you knew him, and you knew what he really wanted instead of what his compassion was making him say.
"Alec," kissing his forehead once again,
"You don't have to worry about me, I can function with a few less hours of sleep perfectly fine."
Alec paused before sighing, "Yes, please."
"Care for me to put on a movie? Or do you want some tea?" Getting up from the bed and walking towards the door.
Alec just stared at you, zoning off like he often did, never the social one nor the one for a normal relationship.
"None of that then," you muttered under your breath, going back towards the bed and sitting on top of the covers.
"You know what I think you need," you told Alec absentmindedly, knowing he likely wouldn't respond, "A vacation. We could go down to Scotland, visit a lil, or go anywhere you like. We both have enough days saved up for it, and frankly I could use a break as well."
"Miller told me I should take one,"Alec mumbled as your fingers ran through his hair.
Humming you curled closer to him, "Well, Miller was right. You sir are too bloody stressed."
The bedroom was soothing almost, as contentful as ever as you sat in silence with Alec. The only sounds being your fingers running through his soft hair, still wet from when he must have taken a shower. The soft light of the lamp you had turned on, cast a warm glow through the room.
"I'll take one," Alec told you softly after minutes of quietness.
"Good," you hummed, throwing the blanket over your legs, shivering slightly from the winter cold that seeped into the house.
"Are you sure you don't want to see anyone, I know they aren't just about me and Daisy," hinting at his heart condition, knowing that subconsciously it did scare him, the fear of leaving you alone.
"You're here in front of me," Alec muttered sleepily, his words slurring as he started to drift off again, his lack of sleep for the past few days coming back to haunt him. "You help me more than anyone or anything."
Internally you were cheering, whoever knew that the grumpy Scot you met on a business trip could have been so lovable. That he would open up more than anyone you had ever known, even if it wasn't his priority.
"I love you, Alec," you told him, switching off the bedside lamp, as you curled into him.
"I love you too," Alec grumbled, his hot breath hitting your skin as you drifted to sleep, his soothing heartbeat loud as ever against your own.
