This Is Our Family

Part 7

Not long after KJ had gone, Carina left to go pick Kai up from the station so they could head to the game. Kai's and Robbie's middle school was only a few blocks from the station, so on days when neither Karter, Carina, Andy or Maya could pick him up, he just walked to the station with Robbie and hung out.

Carina pulled into the parking lot of the station parking her Porche right next to Maya's gray Bronco.

Carina noticed there was nobody in the reception area of the station when she walked in, which she found strange. It wasn't until she heard shouting coming from the barn that she found anyone. She walked out into the barn and saw Kai, Robbie, Jack and Maya in a heated game of 2 on 2 basketball. Maya and Kai were teammates, while Robbie and Jack made up the other team.

Jack playfully whined, "What! That's a foul! Kai just attacked me under the rim!"

"I don't see any blood, so there's no foul!" Kai turned and yelled playfully back at Jack.

"Our ball!" Kai continued

Carina walked towards them laughing. Maya spotted her and gave her a big smile.

"Andy, sub in for me!" Maya said as she made her way over to her wife.

Maya and Carina locked each other in a hug and gave each other a kiss.

"Hi, bambina," Carina said softly.

"Hi back to you, beautiful. Is KJ excited for her game?" Maya asked.

Carina looked at Maya with a soft smile, but sadness in her eyes because she knew KJ was sad Maya wouldn't be able to make it to the game.

"She's excited to start the season, but she's sad that you're not going to be able to be there," Carina said.

Disappointed, Maya said, "I want to be there so bad, but unfortunately, I can't make emergencies stop."

Just as she finished her sentence they were interrupted by the blaring of the alarm.

*AID CAR 19*

*REQUESTED TO 359 MAPLE AVE, POSSIBLE KITCHEN FIRE*

Maya quickly pecked her wife on the lips.

"Duty calls, babe. I love you! Kai be good for your Mama!" Maya yelled as she ran to her turnouts.

Carina waved, "Be safe, bambina! Ti amo."

Kai walked over to his Mama. She put his arm around his shoulders and snuggled him in for a side hug.

"Andiamo, bambino. We don't want to be late for the game," Carina said to Kai, and they turned around to walk out of the barn.

Kai stopped and turned towards Robbie.

"You wanna come with us, Sully?" Kai asked his best friend.

"It's okay. My dad gets off shift in about 20 minutes and is going to come pick me up! I'm gonna hang out here until he comes to get me. Besides, I think Ben is upstairs in the beanery, so I'll go bug him," Robbie said back to Kai with a mischievous grin.

"Alright. See ya later, Sully!" Kai shouted as he ran out of the barn to go meet his Mama in the car.

Carina and Kai were sitting right on the third base line next to KJ's dugout. It was the bottom of the 4th inning and KJ was up for her 2nd at bat. It had been a rough start to the game. KJ struck out looking at her 1st at bat and had let a ball get by her behind the plate while catching.
