Neteyam and Luana sat together on the sand. Neteyam watched her patiently as she beaded little shells through Neteyam's hair that she had collected for him. She wanted them to match her own.
Neteyam had no way of turning them down when Luana brought them up to him, eyes sparkling with joy.
He was prepared for Lo'ak's teases that he would endure later on.
"Hey Neteyam?"
"Hm?"
Luana paused for a second, fiddling with one of the braids to make sure it looked perfect,
"How does your family treat you as the next leader?" She asked, putting her hands in her lap.
Neteyam always seemed to have things under control. He was the perfect son. Always helping everyone, he was a great warrior, and a great hunter.
Neteyam paused, looking to the sand in thought.
"Sorry is that too personal? You don't have to answer"
He smiled slightly. "No its okay" He took her hands in his, playing with her fingers while he talked.
"I mean its fine. They are pretty good to me. I mean- they expect a lot from me. I just try to be the best I can for them and for my people"
Luana didn't say anything, giving him the silence he needed to urge him to talk further.
"Although, it does get overwhelming sometimes" Neteyam said.
The next thing he said resonated with Luana so much to the point that she just wanted to scream.
"I don't know. Sometimes it feels like I can't really show any negative emotions without people freaking out. Its like i've hidden them for so long that if I bring them out now, people will worry for my future as a leader"
Luana felt her throat start to close. She was feeling tears well up from the sheer thought that Neteyam felt the same way that she did all the time.
And she hated that, because she knew how much it hurts.
"Do you know what I mean?" Neteyam said.
Luana just wanted to hug him, bawl her eyes out and tell him that he wasn't alone.
But even now, Luana had learnt nothing. Even with Neteyam, she couldnt show how she really felt.
She just gave him a reassuring nod. She broughther hands up to his face, gently caressing his cheeks and smoothing over his stripes.
Neteyam sighed, leaning his forehead against hers. "Thank you for telling me" Luana spoke so softly it could be considered whispering.
Neteyam pressed a gentle kiss on her lips. When he pulled back, he grinned smoothing his thumb over her bottom lip.
She stood up, grabbing his hand. "Do you wanna see what you look like?"
Neteyam had forgotten about the shells in his hair, the topic of conversation clouding his mind. He nodded, and walked over to the still water with her.
He looked at his reflection. There were only a few shells, but they looked so similar to Luana's. Neteyam smiled, and looked towards her.
She had her hands clasped together and she was rocking back and forth on her heels. "So?"
She just knew he was going to get grilled by Lo'ak, but he didn't care. "I love them, you did so good"
Luana squealed, running up to Neteyam and jumping into his arms.
