It felt good to have a few days off. His mood lightened. He decided to let it go. Flix was right. He had harbored hard feelings about his boss not hiring Margo. But that decision wasn't his to make. He'd overstepped, he reasoned, feeling the warmth rise in his cheeks.
Phalen knew he had been wrong to promise Margo the job. It was Flix who was calling the shots and writing his paycheck every week. But he and Flix had been through hell and back. Phalen decided his own bruised ego was not worth destroying his friendship with his old war buddy. Besides, Margo had landed a better job and had gushed that she was thrilled to be with her new company. Everything had worked out for the best, Phalen decided. Margo was terrified of dogs and would never have taken care of Baby like Mrs. Glenny did. And if Flix was successful in terminating their case with Mrs. Lime, perhaps, Phalen mused, he could focus his attention on Father Tom. He needed this time off.
"Why not start, now?" he muttered to himself.
The fire that destroyed the outbuilding was troubling. If the arsonist had chosen to set the main house ablaze, the consequences could have been tragic.
