Sero paced around the hospital's waiting room as nurses and doctors rushed into Kaminari's room. His mind racing, thinking of all the things he could've done to prevent this from happening. Running faster so he could've tried to talk to Kaminari in the elevator, pushing Toga out when she made her way into Sero's dorm, etcetera. He felt like a terrible person for allowing something so terrible to happen to someone he cared so greatly about. Sero sat down on one of the chairs outside of the hospital room and put his head in his hands. He, then, heard the familiar shoe squeaks of Ashido's pink crocs (that she borrowed from Kirishima) running towards him.
"I heard what happened, is he okay?" Ashido asked, extremely concerned for her best friend's health.
"I don't know yet," Sero replied, fidgeting with his pants. "His head was bleeding so it could be bad."
Ashido didn't say anything in response, she just sat down beside Sero and took off her bonnet.
"How did you find out about Kaminari?" Sero wondered, wondering how the news got out so fast.
"Himiko told me." Ashido responded, crossing her arms. "Which leads me to my next question, why was Denki so distressed that he couldn't see a six ton heap of metal coming towards him?"
"How did you know he was upset?"
"What person, with a right mindset, would run into the street without looking for cars first?" Ashido asked, taking her crocs out of 'sports mode'. "Don't avoid the question, Sero."
"Fine, Toga was at my dorm and was trying to seduce me or something. So she climbed onto my lap and told me her whole life story, and I tried to push her off but she was pressed so tight against me. Denki saw her on my lap and refused to listen to me." Sero explained, scratching his arm.
"You do know the story about Denki and his sister's troubles, right?" Ashido questioned, watching as more doctors rushing into Kaminari's room.
"Yeah, I do, which was why I kept telling her it would never happen." Sero said, feeling a tear fall down his cheek. "If I had just kicked her out the moment she came into my dorm, Denki wouldn't be hurt right now."
"Maybe, but you can't blame yourself this much." Mina noted, putting her hand on Sero's shoulder.
"No, you don't understand, if I'd kicked her out, me and Denki would be making out right now or watching a rom-com television show." Sero murmured, trying to stop crying. "Instead, we're in a hospital where we don't even know if he's alive or not."
"Don't say that, you could jinx it." Mina hushed Sero, and put her hand over Sero's mouth.
"I don't give a fuck about your voodoo shit, I just want to know if he's okay." Sero snapped, balling his hands into fists to try to relieve some stress.
Ashido moved her hand to Sero's back and lightly rubbed it in hopes to calm him down.
"Why aren't you as worried as I am?" Sero asked softly, another tear rolling down his cheek.
"Kaminari's a fighter." Ashido explained with a small chuckle. "Knowing him, he'd want something more epic than a truck to take him out."
Sero gave a small smile before he went back to sulking. The two stood in silence for a few minutes before a doctor came out with a solemn expression.
"Are you two here for Denki Kaminari?" The doctor asked, holding his clipboard very professionally.
"Yes, is he okay?" Sero asked swiftly and desperately.
"He is alive and is in a stable condition." The doctor responded.
Sero let out a relieved laugh and gave Ashido a tight hug, to which she reciprocated.
"However, he is in a coma." The doctor said. "You may see him now if you'd like, but you mustn't try to touch him yet."
"How long will he be in a coma for?"Ashido asked, shocked at the news her and Sero received.
"It's hard to tell. Days, weeks, months; it's all up to Mister Kaminari." The doctor replied, looking over his clipboard. "He did hit his head pretty hard."
"You can't be serious." Sero mumbled, plopping back onto the bench.
"I am," The doctor said, checking his watch. "I do need to go, so have a nice day."
"You too." Ashido replied with a sad smile and watched as the doctor walked away from them. "Come on."
"What, what do you mean?" Sero responded, looking at the ground.
"We're going to check up on Kaminari." Ashido stated, holding her hand out. "We should at least be by his side."
"Okay." Sero said, grabbing Ashido's hand to help himself stand up.
The two walked towards the room Kaminari was in and Sero stopped before he got to the door.
"I'm sorry, I can't do it." Sero whispered, taking a step back.
"Hanta, you got this." Mina said, rubbing Sero's knuckles with her thumb. "We have to be there for our friends."
"Fine." Sero muttered, taking a deep breath and making small steps towards Kaminari's room until he was finally in.
Kaminari had gauze wrapped around his head, a tube down his throat, and a cast on his wrist. Sero felt his heart shatter as he looked at a broken Kaminari. Sero let out a few tears and squeezed Mina's hand. Mina leaned her head on Sero's shoulder and shed a couple silent tears looking at her best friend's fragile body.
For the next few days, class mates would come visit Kaminari, but no one would visit more than Sero. Not even Mina. Sero stopped taking care of himself. Skipping out on meals to see Kaminari, missing sleep, not showering, etcetera. He looked like a shell of his former self and it was concerning to everyone around him.
Even Sero's grades started to drop due to his condition. He would stop focusing on class, only thinking about how and when he would go to visit Kaminari. The only thing going in and out of Sero's mind was Kaminari. Sero even stopped talking to his classmates due to him wanting to spend all of his time with Kaminari. Waiting patiently for him to wake up from his coma. Sero made sure to buy flowers and balloons every time he visited to bring light to the dreary hospital.
There was nothing Sero missed more than Kaminari's cheerful smile and hearty laughter. But, he knew he had to potentially wait for a bit before seeing either.
