Carter Rose’s POV:
The wind was howling and I was bitterly cold, but that didn’t matter as the tears slid down my face. Jesse was looking back at me with pity, but he continued to trudge forward through the woods, and I continued to follow him.
We soon came to a large opening. It was a massive boulder in front of some patchy bushes and trees. Any passerby wouldn’t think anything of it. Jesse took out a small turquoise rock from his pocket, and placed it in a little shape in the lower corner of the boulder. The rock started to glow, and the boulder shook slightly. My mouth dropped as the boulder slowly glowed until I was forced to look away from the blinding light. When I looked back, there was a gate. It was made of vines and had two armed guards on each side of it. They carried spears made of stone and wood, and they wore red uniform. They looked very regal.
Jesse nodded at them, and we were let through. I guess they knew I would be coming. As I walked through, the forest lit up before my eyes. There was a little village with rivers and houses made of rock, wood and straw. Birds were tweeting and children and busy workers were everywhere. I was astonished. Jesse urged me forward up a path where nobody was.
“I’m taking you to the palace. You’re parents are there. Well, not your real parents, but...” Jesse finished, and then nodded at me as he led me through the bushes and other wild plants.
I was shaking now. This was unreal. Faeries? What? Wake up Carter, wake up!
After about ten minutes of walking, we reached another opening. I pushed a large leaf out the way, and was amazing at what I saw.
A large palace was standing right in front of me. It was grand and regal. With windows that were in different shapes, bricks of different funky colours, and again, guards.
Jesse smiled at them and said my name. The guards looked taken aback. They stared at me for a bit, before coughing to cover it up, and then opened the grand doors.
Inside were red carpets and busy workers rushing around cleaning, and tending to people’s needs. At a desk, was a young woman who smiled at Jesse, ignoring me.
Jesse gestured to me before pointing to my name on a piece of paper. The woman forgot to breath. She was astonished. Her big blue eyes were bulging as she gazed at me open mouthed. “Please, Miss Carter, come this way with me. Take a seat, make yourself comfortable. The chairman will be with you very shortly.”
We were in a waiting room. It was empty. There were big wooden brown doors that were many meters high.
Jesse was sitting opposite me, smiling at me and taking in my sight. I tried to smile back, but I was just too shocked about what had happened in the last few days.
Suddenly, the doors opened wide and a man strolled out. He wore a red and white cloak and had a puffy white beard. “Ahh, Miss Carter! What a pleasure it is to have you in our presence. We thank our stars that you are here. We are in desperate need for your assistance. You have no idea how much we-“
“What? What are you talking about?” I asked.
The old man was slightly taken aback by how I had interrupted him. Obviously they don’t do that here.
Jesse cleared his throat. “I’m sorry, Arnold. Carter grew up with humans. It is natural to act like this for them. Please do excuse her behaviour.”
The old man, who I was guessing was Arnold, nodded his head. “Very well. I do understand. It must have been awful to live with those creatures, but it must be even more stressful for you to be away from your home Princess.”
I was staring at him now, looking very rude indeed. I stepped back slightly. “No! I’m not princess. What are you talking about? I mean... I... you...I’m not...where are my parents?”
Arnold held his head low and his face turned pale and grim. “I’m afraid they were killed in a battle my Princess. We miss them dearly.”
“No! I mean my real parents!” I yelled.
“Those were your real parents.”
I turned red. “No! They weren’t! I want my real parents! The ones I grew up with! The ones who cared for me and looked after me. The ones I love and have known me since I was a baby. The ones that understand me and love me no matter what!” I was screaming now.
Jesse looked rather embarrassed.
Arnold shook his head. “You mean the humans I was asked to keep in my custody? Oh, they’re in my office with the guards. Please, Princess come this way.”
My heart was racing like greyhound on a racetrack. I was shaking vigorously and sweating like a pig.
As I stepped into the office, I caught sight of my parents sitting in the corner of the room with about six guards standing around them. I ran over to them, but one of the guards held me back, dragging me away. I struggled against his grasp.
“Let me go!” I yelled.
Arnold nodded at the guard, and he let go. I was embraced by my parents. They were as terrified as me. “What is going on Carter?” Asked Mandy.
I shook my head. “I don’t know. Not completely, but I do know they’re not lying. None of this can be fake. It isn’t. I’m just so confused.” I sobbed.
My dad smiled at me sadly. “It’ll be okay Carter. We love you and we’ll sort this out together.”
Arnold walked towards us and smiled down at us all. “Let’s talk.”
