Scaramouche helps you to lie down on the bed.
"There. How are you feeling?" He asks.
"I'm fine. Tired, though."
Scaramouche sighs. "You should sleep. I'll get someone to pack your things and we'll see if you're well enough to travel tomorrow."
You feel your stomach sink.
If I'm well enough to travel? I can't hold him up like this, he'll just get sick of me.
-
Someone gently shakes you.
"Sorry to wake you, how are you feeling?" Arnold kneels beside you and offers you a glass of water with ibuprofen.
"Ah... Good morning." You mutter. Your eyes fully adjust to the light, and you glance around. Your luggage has already been packed and you grab the water and tablets, downing them.
"I'm okay, don't worry about me." You answer, slowly sitting up, to which he only sighs.
"Okay, are you fit enough to travel?" Oh, right. We have to leave for Liyue today.
Scaramouche enters through the door and you nod, before turning your attention to the Harbinger.
"Y/N!" He walks over to you, and you see the smallest smile in his face.
You sit up and greet him with a warm look yourself. Your condition improved immensely overnight, which relieves you.
"Scaramouche! Are you ready to leave?" You ask. His eyebrows lift.
"Are you sure you'll manage that?" he examines you, and though he'll give it to you, you certainly look better. You nod eagerly and hop out of bed.
Scaramouche agrees and Arnold brings your luggage to the gates, where you say goodbye to him. To be honestly, you'd kinda hoped he would come with you two.
Soon Scaramouche and you are back in the wild. Are you just imagining that, or did his manner change a bit? The two of you were talking about Mondstadt and the Cat's Tail and he actually seemed quite cheerful- as much as Scaramouche can be. It made you smile.
After hours of walking, occasionally chatting and comfortable silece, it got darker.
"Can we stay on that hill over there? I want to see the sunset!" You ask. Your body has had so much energy since you woke up, and you were enjoying it.
Soon you two sit down at the edge of said hill, the golden glow of the setting sun.
It truly is breathtaking. It's slowly getting colder, and after a bit of hesitation, you scoot closer to Scaramouche. Either he doesn't notice, or he is ignoring it.
You lean a bit into him and pull your knees up to your chest. He glances over to you.
"Are you cold?" The balladeer asks. You look up.
"Just a bit, it's fine." Scaramouche shakes his head.
"You were just sick, no way." Pulling away, he rummages through their bag to retrieve his coat.
He lays it over your shoulders and sits back down. You two lean on the tree trunk behind you and chat a little, while the evening sun warms your faces.
Soon there's a comfortable silence between you two, and the exhaustion of the day washes over you.
"Hey, don't you fall asleep on me." Scaramouche mumbles, nudging you.
"Mmph..." You only murmur, the Balladeer letting out an annoyed huff as you don't budge.
SCARAMOUCHE POV:
Y/N makes herself comfortable and lets out a tired sigh. Scaramouche tenses up a bit.
He smiles, knowing Y/N can't see his face right now. Her touch feels warm, comforting, and he carefully leans his head on hers, staring at the slowly darkening horizon.
After a few minutes Scaramouche dozes off as well. It may not be safe out here in the open, but it's safe in her presence.
Y/N's POV:
The child does not belong here.
She doesn't belong here.
She'll fall victim to her own fate. It'll all come down to one decision to save it.
The world.
You rip your eyes open, gasping for air. Irritated by your surroundings, you try to get up, but something stops you.
Scaramouche is lying next to you, sleeping quietly, his arm draped around your waist.
You carefully get up, trying not to wake him. Once you free yourself from his grasp, you walk over to the edge of the cliff.
Your mind is clouded with questions, confusion, whirling around in a circle. What are these dreams? What are they trying to tell you..?
A sudden urge overwhelms you and you choke on the tears rising in your throat. Dizziness overcomes your body and powerless before it, you kneel down. Everything hurts.
Everything.
It never got this bad before, why now so suddenly? Didn't you just get better? Your head is throbbing, ears ringing and breath staggering.
It got worse and worse, the ringing unbearable at this point, until-
"Y/N?"
...
You open your eyes and look up. Scaramouche was kneeling next to you, a look of surprise on his face.
You try to speak, but the lump in your throat makes it hard to even breathe. The only thing you could do is stare at him, tears streaming down your face in pain.
Clearly, he's at a loss on what to do. He looks almost lost in the situation, so he just gently brushes his fingers over your cheek, wiping away some stray tears.
"Let's get you over to the fireplace, you're freezing." Scaramouche gently lifts you onto your feet and you take a trembling step towards the camp.
"I'm fine." You whisper.
Please stop worrying about me.
"Y/N, stop constantly saying you're fine, you are not." He groans.
She suddenly stops in her tracks- the sobbing stopping too, only to be replaced by shaky breathing.
"Y/N?"
Scaramouche turns to look at the trembling girl next to him. Her expression displays... nothing. Her eyes are just empty. The boy grabs her jaw, trying to make eye contact. Suddenly, her eyes roll into the back of her head and her knees buckle under her, Scaramouche quickly grabbing her waist to steady her as she slumps against him.
"Y/N! Don't pass out on me." He commands as he kneels and shakes her, to no avail.
Scaramouche presses two slim fingers against her neck and another onto her stomach. Is she still breathing?
Relief fills him as he sees her chest rise and fall.
You finally wake up in a panic, immediately sitting up.
"Hey, woah Y/N!" Scaramouche jumps up.
"Take it easy, your nose is bleeding." He grabs a cloth and holds it up to your face.
"You need to rest, lay back down." You just stare at him confused, as he gently pushes you back into the mattress.
"What is going on? What happened?" You ask, your voice thick with sickness. Scaramouche blinks slowly.
"You passed out last night. I found you at the edge of the cliff, crying." He mutters as he thinks back to last night.
The way you were cradled down on the floor, silently sobbing to yourself. The way your body shook, and you couldn't even stand... It made his synthetic heart ache.
