___________As I sit in front of the mirror, taking in my entire attire, a mix of emotions swirls inside me. Yes, my dear JANTAA... I'm getting married! The thought still feels surreal.
Whom, you may ask? Well, even I don't know much about him. I mean, I do know his name, profession, and all that jazz. But beyond that, he remains a mystery. I wonder what made him agree to marry someone like me - an average, middle-class girl.
I gaze at my reflection, searching for something special that might have caught his attention. But all I see is an average 5'5" girl with a button nose and cheeks that my friends and family love to pinch, especially Arjun bhai. Standing up, I take in my curvy figure from head to toe. Who can blame me, though? Who doesn't love food, especially when you're Punjabi?
I chuckle at the thought of going all Sherlock Holmes on Google Chrome to dig up dirt on my future husband. Aur kahan, ab main sach main toh kale kapde pahan kar ghar se jasusi karne toh nahi nikal sakti... Aur woh bhi iss ghar se... jahan mohalle main jane ke liye bhi pura parcha sunana padta hai, woh bhi details ke sath. (Where would I go, going all James Bond to find out, especially in this house where every move is monitored and reported back in detail?)
My reverie is interrupted by the door bursting open, and in walks my nautanki sena - aap ne chaturangini sena toh suna ho hoga, well yeh meri nautanki sena hai... (You must have heard of the chaturangini sena, well, this is my own dramatic troupe).
First to enter is my dynamic duo - Chaya and Maya, my twin best friends. They're followed by my chachu's kids, Pooja and her younger brother Adarsh, who are, as usual, bickering about who-knows-what. Pooja is 21 and still in college, while Adarsh is 18 and ready to start college. Then come my second cousins, Priti, Kajal, and Rohan. They're all chatting away when I turn towards them, and they let out a collective gasp, a synchronized "wow" that's both audible and palpable.
"Mooh band kar lo, makkhi ghus jayegi," Rohan quips, his voice still laced with amazement, his eyes locked onto me as if I'm a apparition. I chuckle at their reactions, and the spell is broken. They snap out of their trance-like state, their faces still radiant with excitement..
"Yaar di, aaj toh jiju flat hone wale hain!" Pooja exclaimed, her voice laced with amusement.
"Di!!! Main toh bolta hoon, aap niche mat jaoo, jiju behosh ho gae toh?" Adarsh chimed in, his words dripping with sarcasm, until Pooja's playful smack on his head shut him up.
"Tu kabhi accha mat bolna, Gadha," Pooja retorted, "Kya hai? Jab dekho marti rehti ho." The two friends continued their playful banter, each trying to outdo the other.
Just then, they all chimed in unison, "Shut up, guys!!" - a timely reminder of their surroundings and the occasion.
"Subu, you look like a million bucks!" Chaya squealed, wrapping me in a warm hug. Maya's eyes welled up with tears as she placed a palm on my cheek, her voice trembling, "I'll miss you, Subu." I felt a lump form in my throat as we shared a heartfelt hug.
"Acha, enough of everyone, let me see my princess," Arjun bhai intervened, gently pushing his way through the crowd. He stood before me, his eyes shining with pride, while Maya coyly averted her gaze. I nudged her playfully, and she blushed, her cheeks flushing pink. The room was filled with an unspoken understanding - everyone knew that Arjun bhai and Maya had a special connection, but they were too shy to acknowledge it.
Arjun bhai swept me into a bear hug, his voice filled with emotion, "Aaj main bohot khush ho bachche, I'm sure mumma papa bhi bohot khush honge, upar se tujhe dekh kar." My eyes misted over as he spoke, and I felt a pang of nostalgia.
"Always remember, tu humesha iss ghar ka hissa rahegi, kuch bhi chahiye ho toh bas ek phone kar Dena, okay?" he said, his words a gentle reminder of my place in their family. "Sirf mangne ke liye hi?" I asked, pouting playfully.
"I'm leaving anyway, you won't get an excuse to meet Maya anymore," I said, whispering just loud enough for him to hear. "You still have time. Take this opportunity, or else Nitin will snatch her away." He looked shocked but quickly composed himself. I gave him an innocent smile, hiding my smirk.
"Well done, I knew you all would be stuck here," Chachi scolded, her voice stern. "I sent you all to bring Suhu, not to gossip. Come on, it's getting late."
"Oh, my lovely mother, don't be so angry, it's not good for your skin. You'll get wrinkles," Arjun intervened, putting his arm around Chachi and saving everyone from her wrath. "First, take a look at your daughter."
Chachi's eyes locked onto mine, and a tear rolled down her cheek as a small smile formed on her face. She was about to say something when Pooja cut in, "Please, mom, not again. We've already had enough crying and drama. Di's makeup will get ruined."
"Okay, everyone, bring her out," Chachi said, her voice a mix of sadness and resignation
__________
I was beyond nervous; my heart was racing, and my palms were sweating profusely. But I took a deep breath to calm my nerves. As if on cue, the doors opened, and I began to take slow, deliberate steps forward, with my entire "drama troupe" behind me for moral support.
As I approached the mandap, I slowly lifted my nervous gaze, and there he was, standing tall and proud.
All 6'2" of him, with broad shoulders that didn't look artificially enhanced by protein shakes and heavy weightlifting, and a perfectly trimmed beard. He embodied the perfect definition of Tall, Dark, and Handsome. His dark eyes locked onto mine, and he extended his hand for me to take.
As he took my hand in his, I felt a jolt of electricity run down my body. I couldn't help but keep staring at him. I don't know how, but I felt an overwhelming sense of safety, as if I could trust him with my entire life. Standing beside him, I felt small and insignificant.
I was staring at him, mesmerized, when he turned his head towards me with a sly smirk and leaned in close. He whispered in my ear, "Don't worry, Biwi, I'm all yours. You can keep gawking all you want. Just let the wedding happen." That was it – I was a goner. I'm pretty sure my cheeks were competing with tomatoes for the brightest shade of red.
