A small rock bounced off the toe of her boot as she scuffed her foot along the damp floor. Ten minutes ago, Ben clambered his way to the top of the metal stairs in order to persuade the missing girl to come back home to Auradon. The rest of the VKs milled about outside, giving them their privacy.

Their gathered group was likely to attract attention but none of them wished to impose on an important moment between the young couple. Being discovered by dark forces wasn't a huge concern anymore now that the pirates were most likely aware of their presence.

As the minutes ticked by, the VKs felt more unsettled. The dull thud of boots hitting metal sounded from above their heads. Eva looked up to see the mini Beast making his way back towards them. A forlorn look covered his face; a fact that went unnoticed by her sister who asked where Mal was. Shocked by the fact that Mal didn't wish to return to Auradon with them, the VKs crowded around the speaker, listening as Evie begged Mal to let them in.

Occupied by scanning their surroundings for any sign of a threat, Eva failed to notice the heartbroken boy wandering off. There was a reason guard duty was usually carried out in pairs.

"Go away!" Mal's demanding voice echoed from the speaker, loud enough for the four of them to hear.

"Guys..." Carlos stared down the alleyway behind Eva's back. "Where's Ben?"

"What?" Eva's voice rose a pitch, causing Jay to wince slightly.

It was usually an indication of an oncoming meltdown. Shoving her way between Evie and Carlos, the (failing) knight took a step into the alley, squinting at a dark figure emerging from the smog.

"Ben?" Jay questioned, stepping in front of his smaller friend for protection.

"Don't scare us like that," sighed Evie in relief. The figure loomed closer.

"Don't scare ye." A familiar voice met their ears before the cheerful face of Harry Hook emerged in the light. "But that's my speciality."

White teeth flashed in the scant light as he grinned at the uneasy faces of the VKs. It wavered slightly as his eyes passed over the stubborn look on Eva's face. She's here, his heart thudded. But she didn't tell you, his head reminded. Was she never going to tell him?

He knew that she wouldn't have wanted anyone to know the King was here but surely she could have found a way to see him regardless. When she had first been sent to Auradon, messages were exchanged between the two every day. Recently communication between the two had reduced significantly but he chalked that up to her busy schedule. He hadn't wanted to admit to himself that she had most likely moved on. Perhaps she had found some pompous prince to date that would receive the Evil Queen's approval.
