Chapter 37

Things Change

Harper

It's here. The day I've been waiting for and the day I've been dreading, sort of. Lily and I made the move up to San Francisco last week. It seems like just yesterday we were signing off on the changes that Cade was making on the drawings, today I'm doing the final walk through. It's exciting and scary all at once. Trent and Cole aren't here to bail me out. Mitch isn't here to tell me to stop flirting with the customers. It's just me and Lily. I don't think Lily is going to let me flirt either. That's okay with me.

I wish Trent could have been here today. I'm not sure I know everything I'm supposed to be signing off on. He said to trust Cade. I'm doing just that. I don't really have much choice. Cade is the man who knows exactly what was supposed to happen around here. Not only did he design the place but he oversaw the work. Trent trusts him, not to mention the guy works for Bradford Drake, only the biggest and best structural engineering company in the country. I can't think of a reason not to trust him.

"Well, what do you think?" The man's voice echoed in the empty building.

Looking around the main floor, I can't help but be awed. It's amazing! With the look of an old speakeasy, there's tall wood dividers between half moon booths, dark red leather and slick black marble tables and bar tops. Shining stainless steel taps in the middle of a horseshoe bar. The back of the bar is lit up with lights, sparkling the crystal. It's like stepping back in time. And totally cool.

"Pretty cool, huh?" Cade continues as I walk behind the bar to inspect what we have to work with. It's a big difference from when I arrived last week and walked through the dust and banging of the crew. "Trent wanted the old time look. I'd say we hit every note. We've even put in a secret party entrance for the upper bar."

Yeah, it's pretty damn cool.

"I didn't know what to expect but wow, you guys made it shine." Sliding my fingers down the slick black marble, I can't help but feel a little giddy about it. "Trent's gonna be excited to see it." I just don't know when he's planning on coming up. "Did you hear when Trent's going to come up?"

"Probably when you invite him." Cade shrugs it off and straightens a light fixture on the wall. "It's your baby, Harper. You're the man in charge now."

"Yeah, I know that. I'm just the manager though. Trent owns the place." And man, I wish it was mine. This place is cool.

I did a walk through earlier while Cade was finishing with the zoning commissioner. I guess he's taking care of all the paperwork for Trent. My brother is a big guy now. He's made a name for himself with Full Circle, and now with this one, Second Chance, he's got a real success on his hands. I bet Mom and Dad are looking down on him and they're real proud of him.

"Trent doesn't own this place." Cade suddenly informs me, coming around to the end of the bar, he pulls the scone on the wall and opens up a panel of buttons. Punching in the code, he then presses his thumb to the small screen and the secret door opens. Jerking his head to the side, he waits for me to go in.

The lights automatically come on with a low light up the curved stairway, all the way up to the top bar. Coming to a dead end, Cade again pulls a lever, and another panel opens. Another code, and thumb print is entered before the door slowly swings open on the top floor. It's dimly lit up here, secluded, and definitely has that kind of hidden gem of an area vibe. The perfect place to have a hot date, or a small party. And no one can get up here without the code. About as secret and private as it gets for an updated speakeasy.
