Restless

I woke up the next day late, given the fact that I stayed the night before hanging out with the crew. Gotta say I missed them. I was introduced to more new faces that I didn't promise to memorize their names. Masks everywhere. Ghost avoided me at all costs, and when I say that, I mean every single bit of it. Soap made me feel welcome though, at least for the good part. It didn't feel so alone, but something felt like it was missing. What Simon and I had is nothing but history, that's for sure. I was way over him but deep down, I needed the goodbye hug that I never got.

I couldn't skip breakfast as usual. I grabbed an apple and tossed it in my backpack alongside my gloves, compass, notebook, and everything I could need for the mission. Another bag had tools I'd need. I threw my hat on, put on some body spray, and headed out. It was chilly and I knew I'd regret wearing my sweater pretty soon.

It felt weird being the only outcast there, but I had business to do and that was it. I looked for Soap, needing further instructions and a team. A protection team. Ever since the accident, I found it hard to hold guns.

"Morning!" he luckily snapped me out of my thoughts before it got too dark.

"Hey Soap! Good morning."

"Sleep well?"

"Amazing. I missed the tent."

"Well, I am sure it missed you too, Lieutenant."

I smiled. Soap has always been such a tease, and a shoulder to rely on, "I am not really that anymore, remember?" I teased back.

"You still are to me."

I shook my head, laughing.

He gathered the crew and assigned who will accompany me to the base. Soap himself, alongside Ghost, of course, and another masked... figure that I didn't see in the gathering of the night before. They all greeted me. I didn't know for how long Ghost was still gonna be tough with me so I just remained cold towards him.

"Linda," Soap suggested, "Don't think you met König."

"Hey," I said, hoping to hear his voice. He looked spooky and had a hood covering his entire face except for his eyes, which seemed very melancholic. He didn't say hi back but just nodded instead. As if Ghost alone didn't give me a hard time being adjusted to my new position.

"Konig, this is Linda. A former Lieutenant of ours. And now she is assigned as our military archeologist for this mission. Can't let those big boys deal with those fragile artifacts." he laughed.

"Pleased to meet you." He finally spoke. His voice felt like a spring breeze and warm chocolate if that makes any bit of sense; husky, soft, yet the voice of an arrogant.

"Pleasure's all mine, König," I said back, eyeing him up and down. The size and height difference between us was truly something. He had massively wide shoulders and a huge...tent. It might have been obvious how fixed my eyes were on him. Never seen a mountain built by a man. Such focus needed Ghost to spoil it, of course. He cleared his throat and demanded that we go.

We hopped in the Jeep and I made sure to confirm to Soap that I despise being in the front seat as Ghost drives. And that, of course, is due to his staring problem. I sat in the backseat next to König who took two-thirds of the seats. He made sure he left me enough space and kept scooting over so that I don't feel pressured by his size and gear. I didn't mind it either way.
