I could not stop my trembling hands.
I felt like an outsider amongst the Gods and Goddesses. It felt too surreal walking on Mount Olympus. I tried to avoid everyone as I nervously wiped my hands down my dress.
Why had I come? I was not a Goddess or an Olympian yet I was invited.
-
It was hectic at the Starbucks I work at. I had to pull another 12 hour shift just to keep the lights on.
I sighed as the door bell rang again. After putting on my best customer service voice, I waited impatiently. My eyes never wavered from my till.
After a minute has gone by, I groaned inwardly and glanced upwards.
A huge figure loomed over my counter. His hair was a tussled mess of blonde locks and his sky blue eyes were fixated on me. With a cheeky smile, he ordered.
His power over me felt immense and almost extraterrestrial. I gave him a tight-lipped smile before dropping his change into his outreached hands.
"Thank you, Petra." His eyes widened in childlike delight, scanning my name tag.
I grumbled to myself. I always hated my name. It was not pretty nor feminine to me and I always got teased at school for it.
His piercing eyes do not wander from me as I tried to quickly close up the shop. He was the last customer left as the clock stroke 11. Although I had cleared my throat 3 times already, he had made no attempt to leave or even acknowledge me.
My locs bounced around me as I furiously wiped the counter for the 4th time. Finally I packed up my stuff and started to switch the back lights off.
Stomping over to the unphased male sitting by the window, I sighed loudly.
"Look buddy we are closing up already. You got to go."
"Of course! Where are my manners. I'm so sorry." His voice rang out.
I gestured to the door only to see him move at an incredibly slow pace. I tried not to slam the door too hard behind me when he finally left.
"Well I got to say, thank you for the amazing service. You have been very flexible." His husky voice spoke up beside me, making me jump slightly.
"I uh okay." I stuttered.
"Ta-ta." He called out, waving goodbye at me.
What a weirdo.
I finally relaxed as he started heading away from me. I was going to walk towards my street when my foot bumped into a black hard wallet.
I picked up the luxurious wallet to find wads of notes and an ID of a familiar blonde hair and blue eyed.
"Hey wait! You dropped your- ." I groaned as I realise that the street was empty.
I slowly put the wallet into my bag. I mean maybe he will come back tomorrow for it. For now I will just keep it safe for him.
I trudged up the steps of my apartment to see a big notice slapped on my door.
$500 maintenance payment overdue.
"Tenant will be evicted by tomorrow if payment has not been received." I squinted my eyes at the words highlighted in red.
The blood in my veins chilled and I broke out into a cold sweat.
Tomorrow? How was I going to get $500 by tomorrow.
"Better pay up by tomorrow." A sickening voice sounded behind me.
"Maintenance fee? A maintenance fee for what? You never fix stuff around here. I've been telling you that my heater has been broken for ages and you never fix it!"
My landlord with balding patches smiled as I wiped my eyes furiously. I did not want him to see me cry.
"Well I fixed that." He pointed to a new plastic pot which held plants.
"I saw a crack on the old terracotta pot."
"Thats like from the dollar store! Not $500."
My landlord shrug as he started to walk away.
I wanted to throw the new pot at his head.
I tossed and turned all night thinking of a way to get the money.
I broke my piggy bank to discover I had $400 saved. Maybe I could get $100 in tips the next day and pay my landlord by the night. I felt my hopes lifting up as I tried to settle into bed.
Maybe it will be okay.
-
The next day went by in a blur. I put my best smile and sweetest voice, in hopes of larger tips.
Unable to contain my anxiety, I opened my wallet and counted the total amount of tips.
I trembled in fear as the total added up to about $60.
I felt almost zombie like as I walked backed home.
Its only $40, maybe he will let it go. I tried convincing myself.
But as he shook his head at the bills in his hands I wanted to scream in anger.
"Pack up ur things, be gone by the morning." He stuffed the crumped notes in his pocket.
I felt like a statue. I stayed out in the cold till I remembered.
I tore through my bag to fish out the wallet from yesterday. With trembling fingers, I pulled out enough bills. I paused as I felt wrong. This was stealing.
No, it'll be fine, its just borrowing. I'll pay him back, somehow.
I was banging on his door and threw the $40 in his face. His smile opened up to a crooked grin and he nodded greedily.
"I don't know how you manage to get this but you must be lucky, having the Gods watching over you." He sneered before slamming the door in my face.
-
"Are you okay?" My redhead coworker, Mary glanced at me.
I nodded briskly. I rather not tell her of my shitty landlord or my recurring nightmares. Else I would be dragged into an hour long therapy talk and that seemed a bit too emotionally draining for a Monday morning.
I was fixing the drinks as Mary tapped me on the shoulders and gestured me towards the till. My eyes widened as I saw the familiar blonde bloke from 2 days ago.
I wiped my hands on my green apron nervously before walking up to the till.
"Hello again, Petra. I seem to have misplaced my wallet." Calculative eyes scanned me.
"Yes you dropped it when you left. Here." I quickly passed it to him.
I prayed he does not open his wallet to order.
"It seems like I am missing a few bills." His voice turned into a hush whisper as my face drops.
My cheeks flare in embarrassment.
"About $40."
"I- ." I was starting to apologise.
"Hey! What's the hold up?" Someone yelled from the back of the forming queue.
He analysed me as I pleaded with my eyes.
"Just a coffee to go." His dashing smile returned and I almost sighed in relief.
He raised his cup towards me as he stepped out. My stomach churned nervously as I watched his retreating figure.
