Chapter 18

Alone Again

Sunday morning couldn't have come fast enough for Zhan. To say he was ready to see Yibo was an understatement. Of course, they had a lot to talk about, but he was looking forward to moving on and putting the worst of the past few weeks behind them. Seeing the Community of Lotus High Sign as they were approaching his neighbourhood made him nervous. One minute, he was anticipating seeing Yibo, and the other minute, he was happy about it. They passed Yibo's house, and Zhan fought the urge to jump out of the moving car right then and there. Later, he thought, would be the best time to go over.

After he'd had dinner with his mom and sister, Zhan decided to walk down to Yibo's house. Walking in the night, feeling the breeze stir up many emotions inside of him. He remembered when Yibo would walk him and Chen home when they were young. Yibo's protectiveness was always one of the qualities Zhan loved most about him.

Zhan got in front of the house, and he noticed something in the yard that wasn't there before, a for sale sign. He panicked at the thought of Yibo moving away from Lotus High, but he decided to calm down until he spoke to him first.

Zhan rang the doorbell and a visibly stressed Carmen answered. "Hey Zhan, come in. How are you?"

Zhan walked in and noticed Carmen's dinner and wineglass on the table. He figured maybe Yibo was eating his food upstairs. "I'm good, sorry for disturbing you; I was just looking for Yibo. Is it ok if I go on up?"

Carmen looked at Zhan with bewilderment. "Zhan, Yibo's not here—He didn't tell you?"

Zhan felt his heart beating fast, and he prepared himself for the worst news. "I haven't talked to Yibo since Thanksgiving night. What's going on? Where is he?" Zhan's eyebrows grew big in panic as he continued, "Louis –he changed his story—my recording didn't work—he's back in jail."

Carmen walked over to Zhan and gripped his shoulders. "Zhan sweetheart, calm down, Yibo isn't back in jail. He's in Yemen with his grandmother. He'll be living there from now on."

This was definitely the worst news Zhan could've been given right now. "Y-Yemen—but why?" he stammered. "He's not in any trouble here."

"Zhan, Louis's mom, petitioned the school to make sure Yibo wouldn't return. She said it wouldn't be good for Louis when he came back to have Yibo there; since she is on the school board, it's not hard to believe they agreed to her request."

Once again, Louis was involved with making Zhan's life harder, where Yibo was concerned. If he wasn't laid up in the hospital right now, Zhan would probably strangle him to death; that's just how mad he was with Louis. "That still doesn't explain, Yemen. There are plenty of schools in Lotus High."

"Lotus High was the only public school that even thought about admitting Yibo. As far as private school goes, the only one I could afford is the one Archie Denver is attending because he was expelled. "

Zhan was trying to process what he was being told. He sure had missed a lot the past few days, and it was becoming too much to handle. "I just—Yemen, was it his idea?" After everything, he needed to know if Yibo could leave him so easily—again.

"No, it was my idea. He tried his hardest to get me to change my mind, but I had no choice. It's for the best anyway; he can get a fresh start in a new place. Make new friends—ones who won't judge him so hard on the mistakes he made. The only thing I hate about this is him not having you and Chen in his life. He cares a lot about you two."
