Chapter 19

Forgiveness

November gave way into mid-December, and Zhan was getting back into the swing of things. He was keeping busy by helping his grandparents settle back into Lotus High and plan a small wedding, which was a little less than two weeks away. Zhan also had his plate full with class president events and even mentoring younger boys at Lotus High Elementary. He was welcome to pretty much any distraction that helped him fill the void that Yibo left in his life; even if it didn't work.

He sat at dinner studying for his history exam with Wen Chao, who seemed to be worried about Chen since she stayed home today.

"Maybe I should take her some chicken soup, or do you think she'd maybe like tomato soup. I don't know," Wen Chao let out an exasperated sigh.

"Wen, I'm sure Chen is fine. It's probably a girl's thing or something. She would've called if she needed something."

"You're right. I guess-I'm just not used to her missing school. I think I'm still going to check on her once we're done here, just to be on the safe side."

Zhan dropped his pencil and stared at Wen Chao. It was time, he decided, to ask a question he wanted to know the answer to for a long time now. "Wen, if I didn't know any better, I'd say-"

Zhan was interrupted by Xichen, who had just walked in the door and came straight to their table. "Hey guys. How's it going?"

Zhan was confused by Xichen's sudden friendliness, and apparently, so was Wen Chao. "Um-are you lost?"

Xichen gave Wen Chao an innocent look. "No, I'm actually here to apologise to you, Zhan. I know we haven't talked in over almost a month, and I'm sorry about what happened with Yibo."

"Thanks, Xichen, but I have to ask, where is this apology coming from?"

"Well, you know Louis came back to school today, and everything's kind of strained between the two of us. I realised you were probably the glue holding us together because honestly, I only wanted to be your friend. I also realised how wrong I was and that I owed you an apology for judging you about Yibo. How's he doing in Yemen?"

"We actually don't talk, but I'm sure no one's trying to frame him for murder down there. Yemen is where he needs to be." Zhan had practised saying that so many times that he actually believed it. "But thanks again for the apology. It means a lot."

"No problem, I'll let you get back to your studying. So hopefully I'll see you around." Xichen turned to Wen Chao and smiled. "You too, Wen Chao."

Wen Chao breathed in relief as he walked out of the diner. "Thank god he's gone. He makes me extremely uncomfortable."

"Who-Xichen? Zhan laughed at Wen Chao's admission. "He's probably the sweetest person I know, and I think he has a crush on you."

Wen Chao nearly choked on his drink. "A crush on me-I doubt it. Besides, he's not my type. And I am straight. "

Zhan knew by Xichen's actions that he had a crush on Wen Chao, but Wen Chao didn't know because he was completely unobservant to all people besides Chen. "So tell me Wen Chao -what's your type of girl?"

"Well, not that this has anything to do with our history test, but I like girls who are nice and don't care about what people say about them. She has to care about people-especially her friends; She also likes to do homework, oh and spaghetti, that's my favourite meal, so she has to like that."
