Standing off away from the wedding party I lean onto one of the canopy supports and observe everyone. The cool breeze of the night cools me down and I breathe a sigh of relief.
"So you're the one huh?" I hear in a childlike voice.
Looking down I see Aaron's brother looking up at me and I raise my eyebrows surprised that he's talking to me. He's slightly plumpy and short for his age but even so he's adorable.
"I am the one... and you're Aaron's brother." I say.
"It's James, nice to meet you." he says and outstretches his hand.
Shaking his hand we fall back into silence while observing the people around us, before he speaks again.
"You seem really nice lady, I'm happy for Aaron." he says and I smile before looking back at him.
"That's really sweet of you bud, Thank you." I reply before we're back into silence.
The poor boy looks like he wants to talk to me but he's struggling, so I decide to humor mind.
"Do you ever talk to your brother?" I ask him.
"No... I'm surprised I was even invited." he simply states with a shrug and continues.
"We don't even talk to each other, mom even cried when she got an invitation." he says and I give him a sad smile.
"Really?"
"Yeah... It doesn't feel like we're related even. So I don't really understand why he invites me to stuff if he doesn't talk to me." he explains and I feel bad for him.
"Aaron just struggles to express himself that's all. I'm sure he cares about you." I reassure him.
All the boy does is hum and stare off in front of him. The action reminds me of exactly what Aaron does when he doesn't want to give a proper reply and I smile.
"For a ten year old you seem more mature than most." I comment.
"I'm turning twelve actually and what are you? a cougar?" he says and I gasp at the accusation.
"Fuck no." I laugh and he laughs along with me.
"Care for a dance ma lady?" he says with his hand out and I smile.
"Why yes fine sir." I curtsy and walk hand in hand with him to the dance floor.
When we get to the middle of the dance floor we start dancing hand in hand to the song. We chat about random things all while I don't notice Aaron staring at us.
"I can tell my brother really likes you." he says out of the blue and I frown.
"How so?" I ask.
"He's always looking at you with a weird look on his face. He's usually looks grumpy."
"What kind of look does he give me?" I ask confused.
"It's like when my friend looks at his ultra rare Pokémon card." he says and I have to stop myself from laughing.
We finish dancing and he says he has to go because his parents are leaving and I wave goodbye to him. Watching his figure disappear into the crowd I feel a tap on my shoulder.
Turning around I see Marcus smiling face and he puts out a hand to offer a dance wordlessly I accept and we dance along to the next song.
"You look beautiful Val." he says and I thank him.
I feel eyes drilling holes at the back of my head and I frown. Before turning to see who's looking at me I'm yanked away from Marcus and swept away dancing with someone else.
