It’s been 2 hours and I’m still sitting on the side of the road waiting for my mum to come get me, I’ve left her multiple messages and she hasn’t replied to any of them. I need someone to come get me, it’s almost six o’clock.
I send a text to Kyle. I regret sending it straight away, He’s always running around after me and acting like my taxi, it’s not fair on him but he will always do it anyway. A few minutes after sending the text I get a reply back saying he is on his way.
“Of course you are” I mumble under my breath, I wish one of these days he would tell me he couldn’t.
Twenty minutes later his smiling face come and parks just in front of where I’m sitting then he lifts up a piece of paper and pushes it up against the glass with ‘Darci Mei Becks’ written in thick black marker. I get up and open the boot, putting my bags in the back then I walk around and sit in the passenger seat.
“Did you really need to put the middle name on there?” I whine. Don’t get me wrong, I like my middle name I just hate it when people use it.
“Of course! How else would I annoy you?” He smiles mischievously.
I roll my eyes. “Fine, how are you Kyle Camden Giff?” I smile back.
That shuts him up, my smile widens in triumph.
“Come on, let’s get you home.” He mumbles.
Despite the 5 year age difference, Kyle and I are close as. It has a hint of brotherness in there but it just makes it easier to be around him and easier for me to fall for him.
The trip to my place is filled with laughter and happiness. As per usual we are pulling faces, doing bad impressions, joking around and having our heart to heart talks. We are in fits of laughter as we pull down my drive way until we notice the black skeleton of my house, our laughter stops and it feels like a distant memory. I try and take in the presence of the ambulance, police cars and the fire engine but it’s all too much and to it worse I can’t see any of my family.
I jump out of the car before Kyle can even stop it, I hear him shout my name as I run towards the ambulance, praying everyone is there but only two ambulance staff are sitting in the back talking. Tears start to stream down my face making everything blurry. I start running towards the dead shell of my house when I feel Kyle’s arms wrap around my waist, stopping me from going any further.
“Let me go!” I shout at him “They’re in there!” I try and tear from his grip but it holds strong making me kick and scream more.
“Darci! Darci, listen to me!” Kyle demands “It’s too late, you can’t do anything” he whispers to me.
I shake my head. No, he has to be wrong! There must be something.
His hands cup my face as he tries to hold my attention. More tears come streaming down my cheeks. “Darci, it’s going to be ok, I’ll be here with you the whole way ok? I promise.” He takes one of his hands away from my face and he holds out his pinkie towards me. If I hadn’t come home to this wreck, he would have made me laugh. Reluctantly I wrapped my pinkie around his.
