His arms wrap around my waist, pulling me to the ground causing the ball to fall from my grasp. “Blake! Get the ball!” I yell and fortunately he does. He sprints through the grass getting us a point.

I relax in Kyle’s arms with a big grin spread across my face. “Don’t you just love rugby?” I tease. Kyle pretends to be upset and then he picks me up and starts running towards the river. “Kyle! If you were smart you would put me down!” I try and wriggle free from his grasp but it’s too late, Kyle is running straight through the water and then he drops me straight in it, I come up gasping for air in time to see Blake and Lachie push Kyle in the water.

I lay in between Lachie and Kyle on the rocks, drying of in the late summer sun. It’s been a week since we found out that Tess and Matthew were now legally my guardians since I had no one else apart from my older brother who can’t take care of me.

Everything here is so quiet, only thing I can hear is Lachie and Kyle breathing, the water in the river passing by and the occasional pebble that Blake throughs in the water. The sun warms my face, letting me totally relax… then Lachie has to ruin it. Soaking wet river slime is dropped on my neck and chin, I lay there thinking of was to get him back when I hear Tess calling us for dinner.

“She was trying to poison me!” Lachie yells, pointing at me and I smile sweetly back. “You put it on my face, I wasn’t going to sit there and take it.”

Tess shakes her head. “Lachie sit down and be quiet, the slime wouldn’t of hurt you if ate.” Tess picks up her fork and stabs at a piece of potato and mumbles “I thought a girl in the house would mellow everyone out” I smile and think ‘you pretty much have half a son’.

The rest of the dinner is Matthew telling us all about stories from his past and in the process he gets potato and corn over the floor, table and he accidently flicks it onto Blake’s face which causes me laugh uncontrollably until Blake fires corn at my face. Kyle finds the expression on my face rather humorous until I wipe my hand through the left over gravy on my plate then rub it into his face and hair. “Think it’s funny now?” I question, more gravy on my hand fully prepared to use it.

After that the dinner turns into a complete disaster. Food was thrown everywhere! And much to my surprise Tess got into it to.

Tess holds open the door. “Outside, now. Either go down to the river or I’ll spray you with the hose.”

We all run out of the house and sprint down to the river, the loose pieces of corn and potato fall from the clothes leaving a trail that reminds me of something out of Hansel and Gretel. I run and jump of the rocks closely followed by the boys and soon after that Matthew breaks the surface of the water.

“Ha ha! I have corn in between my toes! I dare someone to eat it!” Blake holds it out to me and tries to get me to open my mouth. “Ew! I’m not eating toe corn!” I yell and swim towards the other side of the river to hide in the protection of Kyle.
