We lay uncomfortably on the rocks until I break the silence. “I guess we have some calls to make.” I stand up and offer him a hand.
He pulls me back down, “No,” he whines, “Stay with me!” I struggle to get up, shimming out from his grip. “I have to call my brother! He will kill me if he finds out through one of our friends!” having my turn to whine.
He finally releases me from my trap; I drag him up to the house and grab my cell phone from under the couch, curious to how it ended up there. I scroll down and find Zale’s number and push down on the little green phone button.
After about the 10th ring, Zale picks up. “Hello?” he says groggily.
“Hey Zale, Its Darci. I have some news.” I mumble, suddenly getting very nervous about telling him. “I’m engaged.” I spit out, I wait nervously for his answer, I jump around the lounge wanting him to say something and quickly.
“To who? You’re like ten or something.” He jokes.
“Zale, think about it. Who would I be getting engaged to? And I’m sixteen, not ten.” I correct him.
“Congratulations little sis! Can you put Kyle on the phone; I have some things to say to him.”
“Oh Zale! Please don’t! You know Kyle and that he will take care of me, he already does.” I whine, stamping my foot. Oh crap did I just stamp my foot? I yell mentally at myself.
I hunt down Kyle and hand him the phone, watching his expression the whole time. “Yes Zale, I promise.” Kyle stands and waits for a reply. “Do you not trust me? I’ve been taking care of her for a few months now; I’ve been helping her through what happened with your parents.” This back and forth conversation goes on for another half an hour when Kyle finally hangs up.
“What was that all about?” I question.
“He was just telling me to take care of you and if I don’t he will hurt me, severely.” He says nonchalant. He hands me back my phone, “I believe you have someone else to ring.” He walks away and passes me the phone; ‘new message’ pops up on the screen ‘Hey Darci, what you up to?’
For the second time today I press the call button. I instantly here a very confused Maia on the other end. “Since when do you use the call button on your phone?” she laughs.
“When I have big news.” I say all the excitement and realisation catching up with me.
“Ok? What is it?” excitement lacing her voice, Maia gets more impatient by the second.
“I’m engaged, Kyle and I are one day going to get married.” My inner girl comes out, I little excited squeal escapes my lips. Maia goes into full out crazy mode, asking 20 questions per second, giving me no time to reply.
“And when we do get married, will you be my maid of honour?”
