One White Dress

It’s been exactly a year since Kyle asked me to marry him and now I’m getting ready to do it. I had nothing to do with the wedding preparation, I left it up to Afton, Tess and Maia, I’m a little afraid to what I will see when I’m going down the aisle.

A thousand hands are fussing over me, hair, make up, nails. One by one they begin to leave, I look down at my nails, seeing a faint semi translucent pink coating them. “Oh lord, they didn’t choose pink as the theme colour did they? No, Afton knows I hate pink.” I try and calm myself down.

“Right, Darci you need to come with me.” Tess grabs my hand and drags me into the bathroom, “Close your eyes and lift your arms up!”

I reluctantly agree. If I didn’t know Kyle was going to be there for me at the end of the aisle, I would have run away from the torture long ago.

I feel smooth cool fabric brush past my skin; the zip is then pulled up, making the fabric tighten around my body.

“Can I open my eyes now?” already was starting to peek in the mirror.

“Yup.”

I open my eyes fully, seeing the porcelain doll version of myself. Her pale skin was perfect, a small amount of blush making her cheeks look rosy. Her blue eyes looked like two small deep blue water highlighted with black eyeliner and mascara, making her eyes pop but the most dominate feature was her full lips, lightly coloured with a dusty rose lipstick.

I move down to the dress, it looks like an origami dress folded from the finest silk. I turn to Tess and hug her, “Thank you, so much.” She says nothing; she just pats the back of my head.

I turn back to the mirror and see notice my hair is up in a messy chignon with two slide in hair combs, delicately decorated with dark sapphires. I carefully touch the combs when Tess speaks. “They were my mothers, she wore them at her wedding, I wore them at mine and now you will wear them. It also covers the something old, something borrowed and something blue. Your dress is the something new.” Tears threaten her eyes, she quickly wipes them away, “Now, don’t ruin your hair or make up. Maia will come see you soon and Matthew will be here soon after that to walk you down the aisle.” She nods and quickly leaves the bathroom.

I can hear the excited guests talking outside, commenting on the beautiful decorations and how unique it was to get married in your own backyard. I get immersed in their conversation, using their words to get a rough description of what was waiting outside for me.

I jump when Maia knocks at the door. “Your look totally gorgeous! I wish I was getting married.” I laugh, “Your time will come Maia.”

She twirls around in a circle, “You like? I picked it out myself.” The dark blue dress fitted her perfectly, the tight top with the loose A-line bottom, decorated with roses looked amazing on her. “Cadie and Rosa have the same dress but without the roses at the bottom.” She informs me.

“What about Emma and Tammy? What do their dress look like?” I question, expecting her not to tell me.

She looks at me, deciding if she should say. She gives in. “they are also similar but they have no roses at the bottom. They are white with a dark blue sash but it’s made so it’s better suited for a five and seven year old. They look adorable!” she gloats. ‘So dark blue is the theme colour’ I think to myself when my thoughts are disturbed by Matthew knocking on the door.

“I was ordered by Afton to get you to put these on.” He hands me a pair of flat white shoes. I slip them on.

“You ready?” I nod, slipping my arm through his.

As I step out onto the deck I hear Saving Grace by Pete Murray start to play, my feet fall in rhythm with the song. Matthew and I follow the trail of dark blue petals left by Emma and Tammy. I turn the corner to see the gathering of mine and Kyle’s family and friends.
