POV Alexis
Date: December
The fence raised, slowly. I was frozen in place whilst it went up, and up, and up. A loud clang was the only signal that it had stopped. I didn't move, and neither did the rest. My breathing faltered, my heartbeat seemed to explode out of my chest and I felt like throwing up. I heard people screaming and with a rough shove, I stepped forward. I snapped out of the fear state and saw that some girls had tried to run back and men were shoving them further towards the arena entrance. No, I thought to myself. Not like that. I breathed in and stepped further into the arena, the girls behind me now slowly falling in line.
When we reached the middle of the arena I took a moment to soak up the sunbeams. Sunlight, how I missed it down here. My palms were sweaty and I felt like throwing up every step of the way. The others didn't look any better. 3 of them had already hurled their guts out on the walk here. No one spoke, we just looked at each other like scared chickens. The commentator had started his usual brabble, which we paid no attention to. I looked at the sides, the places where people were sitting, watching. Trash. All of them. Cruel, useless, wicked people. Why? Why would you watch this? It wasn't just men, no. There were women there too. Laughing, enjoying. Why? Where were their daughters? Their sisters? Would they still be laughing when it was them who would have to fight? Would they still laugh then!? My hate train of thoughts went on and on as a slowly scanned the arena. I spotted Silvano on his luxurious balcony. He was talking to some other men, laughing as they got drunk on something. When the commentator spoke again, Silvano pointed his attention towards us. I stared back at him. Vile, wicked, disgusting creature. He shook some hands and pointed towards us. Rotten, miserable, repulsive bastard. The other men now sat down and started to watch us too. "Fucking come in this arena then, cock suckers," I muttered out loud. "I dare you, I fucking dare you, you hateful pigs," Beatriz raised her brows. "Damn girl," she looked at Silvano and then back to me. "Focus Alexis, he is not here. We are. Let's survive this first, and then talk shit about people we hate," my gaze unfaltering. "Please," Anna now intervened. I tore my gaze away and looked them both in the eyes. "You're right," I put my hands on their shoulders in comfort. "Whatever happens, keep your swords close. Scream if you need help, fight like an animal and fear nothing," other girls had gathered around us as I was speaking. "Good speech," Anna laughed nervously. "I got nothing better, just the hope that we survive this shitshow," I smiled lightly. Beatriz put her hand over mine and squeezed. "Stay close, we'll help each other out," I nodded. Right as I wanted to respond, the gates on the other side started to open. Girls cried out, screaming my name, took a hold of my arm or threw up again. Panic, fear. Why do they think I can help them? I'm just as miserable as they are. The only thing I had was a big mouth. "Steady girls! Steady!" I just called back to them. My palms were still sweaty as I grabbed some sand and rubbed it between my hands. My sword resting in the holster on my side. I took a small step forward to see what came through the entrance. I recoiled. "Motherfu..-" 3 men stalked closer towards us as another on a small brown horse trotted into the arena. "4 guys!?" Beatriz exclaimed. "There are 3 of us, against them. They'll butcher us!" I shook my head and grabbed her hand. "We can beat them, they are outnumbered," I looked at the men who were cheering at the audience and riling each other up. They were all dressed up in Roman outfits, with armour, shields and swords to match. One had a net and the guy on the horse was carrying a spear. "We have to play smart, not strong," Anna frowned as she looked back to the men. The other girls, including Isabella, stood behind us, scared, not knowing what to do or how. But they could be useful. "Girls, I want you to stick together whilst we handle the men okay? You have big shields, they are your best chance," I spoke quickly, afraid that the men suddenly be right behind me. "Stack them on top of each other, and stand in a circle. Hold that position, so no one can breach. Okay?" they nodded, but there was doubt in me if they truly understood what they had to do. "We split the men up, alright? One for each of us," I spoke to Beatriz and Anna. "Lovely play, but seeing that there are 4 men and 3 of us, how is...-" I cut Anna off whilst walking to the right side of the heap of girls. Who had made a small circle of shields. "One will try to go for the circle... I hope," I tried to sound convinced as I unsheathed my sword and twirled it in my hand. "You hope? Dios mío," Beatriz spoke as she eyed the men who had started walking our way.
