the end?
Home at last.
Another nine-hour flight and you had arrived at New Jersey, wandering through the airport with Peter by your side. It felt different now you were together, but good different. Every time you hugged him or held his hand, you had an excuse. You already knew he enjoyed the comfort of your touch, but now that you were dating, he always needed some sort of physical contact with you like it was reassurance that you wouldn't run away from him. You didn't mind, you never had. You were glad being in a relationship had only made you more comfortable with each other - you both had feared it turning awkward.
Your arms swung in sync as you walked, attached by your interlocked fingers. There was a crowd by the entrance, holding up signs saying names, 'welcome home', and 'we missed you'. Nobody that you recognized, aside from Ned and MJ's families. You assumed Pepper and May were waiting outside.
"It's weird that the trip's over already. Like, so much happened but it feels like nothing happened at all." Peter paused for a moment, facing you as he let the crowd filter out.
"Yeah. The plane ride there feels like it was yesterday, but somehow it's been one of the most stressful days of my life."
"God, tell me about it."
"You guys are so cute." You had to make an effort to keep your eyes still when you heard Betty's voice approach from behind you. You knew she was probably sincere but the way every word left her mouth sounded sarcastic and condescending.
"Thanks." Peter had to drop your hand when you turned around to face the couple, who were also joined by MJ, replacing it with an arm around your waist. "Uh, I was thinking that maybe we should all, I don't know, like, go on a double date or something." You leaned into his touch, forcing a smile toward the girl you really didn't want to go on a double date with.
"Oh, we broke up." A puzzled look fell onto your face at their words. But weren't you holding hands on your way over here?
"No. What? Why?"
"Men and women grow apart," Ned spoke slowly as if he was reciting a Shakespeare sonnet in front of an audience. "But the journey they share together will always be a part of them."
Betty placed her hand on his cheek. Again, unusual behavior for two people that just broke up. "You are so wise."
"Thank you."
Ned shrugged before following Betty out of the airport, leaving you and Peter overflowing with questions. "I should go too." MJ began walking toward the crowd as well, only meeting your eyes once or twice.
"I'll talk to you later."
She seemed to light up at your words, sending a small smile your way. "Yeah, see ya."
"Promise me we'll never turn out like them," you requested, grabbing Peter's hand when you continued walking.
"Don't worry. There's no way you could ever be that wise."
"Hey!"
You found your way to the exit, scanning the row of cars outside until your eyes found May begging a security guard not to give her a ticket. "Guess this is where we part ways."
"I'll talk to you later, okay?" You turned to face each other, giving him a small peck on the lips before you left.
"Wait, before you go," he stopped you, "do you maybe wanna hang out later? Like, around the city or whatever?"
"Sure. It's a date." He chuckled lightly, glancing down at your hands as they swung back and forth.
"How does six sound?"
