Sam was easy to talk with, pleasant even. There hasn't been a dull moment on the car ride to the hunt so far. And not to mention intelligent. Not very many hunters I know had not only gotten into Stanford but also almost finished. I just wish someone as sweet as him would have been able to stay out of the life.
"So what exactly was it that got you pulled back into the life?" I asked while the engine was rumbling down the highway.
"A lot of things really. Like they say, once a hunter, always a hunter." He smiled.
"True that. But what happened? You were so close to graduating." I questioned.
"Well, dad had gone missing and Dean needed my help to find him, so I left." He spoke.
"Are you kidding me?" I looked unsatisfied with his answer. "That's all it took? Come on Sam, I wasn't born yesterday. I know that it takes Hell to drag someone back into this nightmare." I waited for a reply. Sam tightened his grip on the steering wheel and adjusted himself in his seat.
"Her name was Jessica." He said blankly.
"Was..." I replied with understanding of the meaning in my voice.
"Dean had picked me up one weekend to go find dad, that part is true. But when I got back to the apartment that Jess and I had shared, I found her dead, on the ceiling. Then the apartment caught fire. It all happened so fast. Dean had to pull me out before I let it consume me as well." Sam spoke to the windshield.
"She died just like your mother?" I asked.
"Dean told you huh?" He let out a chuckle. I nodded.
"He told me about how your mom passed away when you were a baby and that's when your dad became a hunter. Then he taught you and Dean until he passed away too." I said, relaying the story that I had been told the night prior.
"That's it?" Sam snapped his head towards me. I looked back confused.
"What do you mean?"
"That's the story he gave you?" Sam questioned.
"Is that not true?" My mind began to question why Dean would lie to me.
"No, it's true, it's just leaving out a few details. A few major details." He let out a laugh.
"Like what?" I pushed.
"Um, like the apocalypse, him going to Hell, then coming back, me going to Hell and coming back soulless, how he got out of the life then back in, working with the King of Hell..." He clarified.
"And why didn't he tell me this?" I asked concerned.
"I don't know if you've noticed this or not, Dee, but Dean isn't one to really share all of his story and feelings to other people. Shit, half the time I don't even know what's going on." I turned my head to look out the window.
"Yeah, I have noticed." I almost whispered.
"But don't worry, if he didn't like you, he wouldn't be caring for you. He's just used to losing everyone he lets in." He said as he patted me on the back and his phone began to ring. He pulled it out of his pocket and answered it.
"What Dean?" Silence. "No we're almost there." Silence, again. "Yes, I'll let you know when we get there and you Baby is safe. We're ok, Dean, we're adults." Sam chuckled and hung up the phone.
"He sure is worried about this car." I let out a laugh as we pulled up to an old hotel. Sam smiled and parked the car.
"I'm not so sure he was talking about the car this time." He winked and got out to check us into a room.
