Wreaths of ash-gray fog dangled over the wet greenery of the park, which fluttered gently by the icy breeze. The halcyon whistle of the slight wind rattling among the trees shrouded the four men, who stood at the entrance, just watching their breath cloud in the air in front of their face.

The gravity of the situation had robbed them of the ability to talk and bombarded their mind with the ghastliest of thoughts. They didn’t know what to expect when they would go to the given location, and the possibility of losing each other was ruthlessly lodged in their chest, squashing it down.

Taehyung slipped his phone out of his pocket to check the time and heaved a sigh as he saw they only had two hours left. His melancholic eyes seesawed between the three and dropped anchor on Jungkook at last, who stood beside him. “We have to leave. The place is far from here.” He gave two sweet caresses to his nape, and only then Jungkook met his gaze. “I’ll notify you of our location when I press the button on my ring. You can find us with the program Jimin installed on your phone.”

“They will probably take all our stuff, though,” Yoongi voiced out quietly.

“I know,” Taehyung sighed, still gazing at the poorly hidden grimness that hung over Jungkook’s features like a curtain. “I’ll give you my last location. I won’t have any way to contact you or help you. So you have to stay safe, okay? Alive. You have to stay alive.” His eyes drifted to his friends and roamed over them. “All of us have to stay alive.”

Jimin, with creases of worry and disquiet adorning his forehead, nodded his agreement. “We’ll stay alive. Joo Eon knows us, anyway. He knows you better, Tae. Maybe you can talk to him.”

“I’ll try.” Taehyung stepped in front of Jungkook and cupped his cheeks. Despite the turmoil of constant unease that roared inside him, he smiled reassuringly. “We’ll be fine. We’ll do our job, and you have to focus on yours. You’re detective Jeon Jungkook, team leader of violent crimes unit one. The moment we leave, I need you to be a detective and not my boyfriend.”

Jungkook passed a loving hand through his hair as he fused their bodies. He could individuate his apprehension, no matter how hard Taehyung tried to disguise it. It lingered in his chocolate eyes, dimming the spark in them. “I know what I have to do, Tae. It’s just hard to do it without worrying about you.”

Taehyung clutched him in his embrace, burying his face into the crook of his neck. He felt Jungkook’s arms grip him with the same desperation and his heart gave a leap of anxiety mixed with agony. The thought of this being the last time they were holding each other made his nose burn with a looming flood of tears, but he screwed his eyes shut and endeavored to choke them down.

Jungkook smoothed a hand down his back, then cradled his nape and withdrew enough to look at him. “I trust you. And I love you. Stay safe for me, okay?”

“Yes. I love you too, Kook. Stay safe as well. Try to sleep tonight and tomorrow you can start planning the operation.”

“Not tomorrow,” Jungkook argued. “I’ll start the moment you leave.”

“We need time to search the place so we can help you when you come. And maybe gather some information first.” Taehyung saw the agitation in his eyes fester and shushed him with a delicate peck. “You need to have patience, Kookie. And don’t forget we’re professionals. We won’t get caught.”

Jungkook salved his frustration and extreme worry with a sigh. “You’re right, I know you’re right.” He brought their lips together in a long, gentle kiss. “Go. I love you.”

“I love you too.” Taehyung kissed him again hard, letting their tongues intertwine and roll together.

They disconnected their mouths and allotted a few moments to savor the closeness, love, and safety they felt in each other’s embrace. In that moment, as they shared that tender gaze, they chose to believe in the intensity and power of their feelings — to believe they would keep both alive and lead them to one another again.
