Simply put, it is easy. Divergent is a simple book (or film if you want, but aww), about girl who wants to fit somewhere. But somewhere in the middle of her quest to fit she finds the secrets of the society and someone starts the war with her in its centre. There are not many characters and they usually behave like anyone from their given faction. There is romance, but its only about Tris and Four (and little about Christina and Will). So from any other character you can make love interest for your OC and not upset anyone.
There are fights, deaths and war. But not so much as in Hunger Games so your OC will have time to grow up.
There are factions like in Harry Potter, but not much interaction between them. You can choose one faction to grow up in and another to move in. In books there is not much description about initiation in other factions. The most is known from Dauntless initiation, then that Candor will put you through truth serum when you tell them all your secrets and in Erudite is some IQ test. So you can make something up. And even if you change already described initiations, the book only described completely the Dauntless initiation and even that was only one year. Factions usually change initiations every year with their instructors.
These books are like foundations and you can built anything up.
