"What will you do after the tour is over?"
Out on the rooftop of the chicken coop, Katsuki and Cadence laid side-by-side and watched the heavens turn overhead, pointing out the occasional shooting star and listening to the susurrus of the wind. Their hands laid, tangled, on Kat's stomach. Cadence laid in the crook of his arm, her head resting on his chest.
Her innocent question made Kat's stomach do cartwheels; he'd been thinking about the same exact thing for the past few days, wondering what he would do to fill his time without the early morning gym runs and the constant deluge of drama. "Not sure," he grumbled, "I guess I'd try to get my job back as a hero... if my stupid busted-ass hand will get its shit together any time soon." The hand in question had been feeling better off-and-on since Shane took a look at it, sometimes tingly or shooting with pain at odd intervals. Kat hoped that was a good sign.
"I mean, we could just chop your hand off and replace it with a robotic one," Cade murmured while tracing the veins along Kat's numb hand in the moonlight. She laughed and added, "Then you'd evolve into Metal Dynamight! O-or like Mecha Dynamight!"
Kat scoffed. "What, like a Digimon or some shit? No thanks, Blue."
"Oh, come on! It could be super cool! Maybe we could install your hand with, like, a laser sword! O-or a sonic cannon!" Cade giggled, finally lacing her fingers in his once again. "But... I guess I would miss this."
"This?"
"Holding your hand."
"You wouldn't hold hands with my robot one?" Katsuki chuckled.
"I would! It just... it wouldn't be the same, you know? Can't exactly hold hands with a laser sword."
"Damn. You're right."
For a second, the only sound was their laughter drifting away on the wind, the gentle shhh of the breeze through the corn stalks, and the sleepy cooing of the hens beneath them. Katsuki tightened his grip around Cadence, feigning a shiver to pull her close. How did he find the words to tell her how he felt? How did he say 'I want you to move in with me' but without being a simp or a jerk about it?
"What about you, Blue?" he asked first, still working up the courage to say the words he really meant. He kept his eyes on the skies as he said, "What will you do?"
She nuzzled into the warmth of his chest and sighed, "I don't really know. My mom usually has something or other scheduled for after the tour, but I haven't heard her mention anything yet."
Katsuki frowned. "No break? No vacation?"
"This week at my dad's is our only vacation," Cade said softly. "Once a year, we get a week off. Otherwise, mom books us full."
In reality, Katsuki knew he'd only known Cadence for a few months, and he knew that he fell hard and fast for her... but the secretly romantic side of him wanted her to move in with him, to escape her family, to give up the pop star life and be normal for once. But how could he ask that of her when being a bass-playing, show-stealing, badass was the only thing she knew how to do? How could he ask her to leave her family, no matter how awful and abusive they were?
"Kat? Are you okay?"
He blinked away his internal thoughts and found Cade staring up at him with her big, dark doe eyes. "I'm fine, Blue," he grumbled, pushing himself up and shimmying toward the side of the coop. "I've gotta go finish packing," he lied. He hopped down and landed in the dirt, walking off toward the house. "I'll see you in the morning."
"Right, yeah," Cadence said softly, waving him off. Katsuki disappeared from sight, lost in the dark of the yard, and Cade pulled her knees to her chest, resting her chin across her kneecaps. Did she say something wrong?
