(Author Note: Hello! This is my first time writing fanfic so it'll probably be a bumpy ride. Chapters will probably be a bit long. We'll see how this goes. Hope you enjoy!)
"Coach is so going to chew our heads off for this," I say, pulling at my long black sleeves so that they covered my fingers. Of course, Andrew would force the three of us to wear matching outfits. His medication did always have a sick sense of humor. Aaron just scoffs at my comment, looking anywhere but in my vicinity. Nicky on the other hand is pacing, warm brown eyes squinting at the ground. I doubted he was capable of sitting still for even a minute.
"Coach isn't going to find out because you aren't going to tell him," he says, but stops as though a thought had just occurred to him. "You aren't going to tell him, are you?"
"And risk Andrews's wrath? No way." I laugh. I may be new to all this "Minyard" stuff but they can't really think I am that much of an idiot. "I'm just worried about what's going to happen when the newbie realizes his taxi driver isn't who he says he is."
"And how would he figure that out?" Oh! Look who decided to join the conversation. I looked over at Aaron, and he is staring resolutely at my shoulder. Figures.
"Because even unmedicated, you and Andrew are completely different. It took me two seconds to tell the two of you apart when you tried to pull that parent trap bullshit on me."
Again, Aaron bristles. But it seems he has reached his quota for speaking to me today and goes back to staring at the paved walkway. Kevin on the other hand seemed to be getting impatient, constantly checking his phone for the time.
"Where the hell are they?"
"Maybe Andrew got into another crash?" I say in German. Well as good of German as I can manage. I'm still getting used to some of the grammar rules. It seems I was close enough because Aaron freezes, his knuckles turning white in how tightly he clenches them. Nicky lets out a startled gasp.
"Alice, what the hell," Nicky whispers, but I simply shrug. It was his fault for filling me in on that tidbit of information. Was it a low blow to bring it up in front of Aaron? Yeah, probably. But that was what he got for ignoring me.
"Hey. It's a valid point. Why you lot let him drive you around is mind-boggling. I know I have a death wish, but what's your excuse."
Kevin's gaze flicks to my own, a frown pinching at his lips. "Quit it with the death wish talk. We need you in as defensive dealer if we have any real shot of winning a game this season. Let alone make it to playoffs"
"What was that?" A smile spread across my face as I bring a hand to my chest. "That could not have possibly been a sign of worry, if not a compliment, from The Kevin Day. Aw, Kev, do you really care about lil old me?"
Kevin's eyes widen as I take a step toward him, his cheeks blushing just slightly. But he is saved from responding when Andrew's car whips in front of them. It is barely put in park before Andrew is hopping out and walking toward the trunk.
I turn away from Kevin, excited to finally see the fresh meat. I did not know much about the freshman. Kevin said he had promise, but Andrew insisted that he would not be lasting the year. Neil Josten popped the truck door open and followed Andrew back to the trunk before returning with a rather lame-looking duffle bag.
Nicky readied himself at Neil's approach sending both Aaron and me a warning glance. As Nicky went to meet him halfway, I let myself assess the newcomer for myself. Neil was short, still taller than me by a couple of inches, and had dark brown hair and tanned skin. He was a wiry fellow, long-limbed, and looked as if a sudden noise would send him running. Andrew was right about him being a runner. He had that same look about him that a couple of the kids up in Oregon had. A look earned from years of constantly keeping still lest they get met with knuckles or chairs or thrown against walls. Well, he is a fox alright. I felt Andrew move to stand by my other side, Aaron on Kevin's right.
