"Izu, babe?"

"Hmmm?"

"Can I- can I see your scars, please?"

Your boyfriend froze on the spot.

"I- I, ah...." He looked so torn. "What- what do you want to see them for?"

"Babe." You stepped closer to him, sadness lacing the expression on your face. "I know that- you don't like them, but..." You paused, searching for the right words. "I won't judge you, Izu. Plus, your scars are proof that you're a true hero. Please, babe? I won't force you if you don't want to, but I... I just want to see them."

His expression softened, his bottom lip quivering.

"You... you won't... make fun of them or anything?"

"Babe, no! Of course not! D-don't you trust me?"

He pulled you in for a quick hug, then met your eyes with his soft ones.

"Of course I trust you."

With a trembling hand, he rolled up his sleeve, showcasing his crooked hand along with the tiger-striped scars running up his arm.

You glanced at him with a questioning look. "Can I touch them? Are you okay with this?" you seemed to ask.

He hesitated for a moment, then nodded his head.

At first, as if afraid to scare him, your fingers barely brushed the rough skin. Then, with a firmer hand, you rubbed the bumpy skin against your thumb and sent them soft kisses.

His breath caught in his throat as your lips met the most hated part of his body. At that moment, for him, it felt like time had stopped completely. It was just him and you and his scars.

He'd always hated them. For how they looked and how everyone else seemed to make fun of them. He was deeply insecure about them, and tried to cover them.

But, in the split second where your lips met his scars, he finally realized it. They were there because he was a hero. An actual, genuine hero.

If you'd told him that when he was younger, he never would've believed it. Yet, the proof was right there- his scars, a permanent reminder. He was a hero.

And at your touch, at your love, as all the hatred and insecurity fell away- he felt like a hero.
