I finished cleaning the house and checked the time. 3:26 pm. I decided to head out just in case I got lost. I didn't want to be late. I really needed this job. I was falling behind on payments and I didn't want to ask my mom for money. I wanted to show her I was responsible enough. I grabbed my bike, no not a motor bike just a regular bike, a sting ray to be exact and plugged in the address into my phone. It was a regular full touch screen. Really out of date and really shitty but I managed.
I rode on my bike for about 15 minutes until my phone did a funny beep and I spotted the coffee shop. I looked across and saw the building and the number 544 plastered with gold. I checked the time and it was 3:48 now. Being 10 minutes early will show I'm determined and dependable, I said to myself. I entered the building as saw the same guy who smiled at me standing up and shuffling through a big stack of papers.
"Hello." I said smiling.
He looked up and smiled again. "Jessett?"
"Yeah that's me." I said awkwardly.
"You're early. I'll see if he'll talk to you now." He flashed his obscenely white teeth and left the room.
Suddenly I was nervous. I popped a piece of minty fresh gum into my mouth and checked myself in the window. I looked rather presentable. I had tied my hair back because people have told me it made me look more mature.
The smiling man came back to the room and gestured for me to walk over. I did as he gestured and led me into another room here a bigger man sat at a desk.
Geez. This dude looks like a bodyguard, I thought to myself. I was rather intimidated by him but he smiled at me and looked as innocent as ever.
"Hi." He stood up. "I'm Paul. It's nice to meet you." He said. He held out his hand.
"You to0." I shook his hand and waited for him to sit down before I did.
"So Jessett.." He started.
"I like to be called Jess." I interjected.
"Jess.. It says here you're 18, almost 19 in a couple of months."
I nodded.
"You live by yourself, correct?" He asked.
"That is correct."
"So you graduated high school and haven't went to college?"
"Well I can't afford it. I've been paying for some standard online classes." I said feeling a little embarrassed.
"No siblings and no father."
I nodded once again.
"Well you ha two previous jobs like this. One for Masheek and another as a cleaner at a retail store.." He patted his chin. "Do you like kids?"
"Oh yeah. I've babysitted a bunch of times. I left the phone numbers of the parents on the back of the application. Am I also going to watch over kids?" I asked. "I noticed the questions were a bit odd." I started to play with my hands. I could feel the nerves starting to kick in.
"Well this situation is..well it's not particularly ordinary to say the least. My boys can be quite a handful." He said smirking.
"How many?" I asked.
"5.."
My eyes widened but I composed myself. 5 little kids.. Sheesh. "I'm sure I can manage."
"The job requires constant availability. You will be cooking and cleaning for the boys and at times you will have to be around them." He said.
"Sounds easy enough." I said. "What are they like? Trouble makers?"
"You could say that. Louis is ..loud and loves to joke around. He might be your biggest problem especially when Harry is involved. Harry needs constant attention." He smirked. "Liam is pretty mature. He tries to make sure the boys aren't as bad as he knows they can be. Zayn is pretty quiet. He keeps to himself, sometimes I forget he's there but he can be just a loud as Louis if he wants to be."
I just nodded and smiled at everything he said. The names sounded familiar to me. What an odd bunch of names, I thought.
"Niall.. As long as you feed him he will be happy."
"Mr.-"
"Just call me Paul." He interrupted.
"Paul.. I have had a lot of experience with kids. I'm playful and I listen well and I also know when to put my foot down. As or the cleaning ad cooking, I grew up on my own while my mom worked to keep the bills going. I cleaned the house every day and I don't mind it and I also took a lot of cooking classes in high school. I'm never late and always available so you don't have to worry about me not coming in or answering my phone. I really need this job to get my bills paid off and save up for more online classes." I said.
He gave me a look which I had no idea what meant. He smiled at me and rubbed his face. "You're hired." He said.
I smiled. "Really?! That's great!"
"The pay starts off at 25 an hour."
I almost choked. I started coughing. 25?!
"Is there a problem? Is that not enough?" He asked raising an eye brow.
"No.. Wow that's a very generous amount sir."
He smiled. "I think you're perfect for the job." He grabbed a piece of paper and scribbled something on it. "Meet me here tomorrow at 10 am sharp and you can get started. The boys will be dropped off at home around 3. You can meet them then. Just make them a quick dinner and clean up what ever is left and you can head home." He said with a smile.
"Thank you so much." I took the piece of paper and shook his hand.
We said our goodbyes and I headed out the door and decided to walk my bike home.
This is great! I thought. 25 an hour?! I could pay off everything I needed in a couple of months because of this job. I couldn't wait to get started and make money.
But of course I had no idea what was in store for me and my money making. Danger was written all over this job but I was too blind to see it.
