Clarie greeted us at the end of the hall. She ushered us inside one of the patient rooms, where we all barely fitted into the tiny space. Packed like sardines, we found respective places to sit. The walls were painted a faded blue with a bunch of colorful ads. Some advertised what type of birth control to use, others were anatomical graphics of genital parts. None of which gave me any sort of comfort, but it was definitely a welcome distraction from what was about to happen.
"So, how's everyone been doing?" Cheery as ever, Clarie greeted us with a warm smile. "Remy, any new symptoms to report?" she asked.
"Hmm, no. I've been good." The nausea had faded away quickly and my appetite had returned. All things that were a good sign of steady progress.
"No complaints I see. That's awesome." The woman turned on the bulky ultrasound machine, dimming the lights so she could focus on the next task.
I adjusted myself on the exam table, reclining on the thin paper film so I could get more comfortable. Theo and Nate sat in the small plastic chairs on my left, all of us turning our attention to the flat-screen TV in the far right corner.
"Now, let's check out that belly of yours," Clarie beamed, gently coaxing me to reveal my stomach. Hands all sweaty, I dragged my hoodie and top up. I wasn't that big, but you could tell I had gained a few pounds. My belly always looked bloated, like I had just eaten, which only added to my own insecurities.
Cold gel was delicately spread on my skin before Clarie rubbed a large probe wand on my stomach. The room was silent. Not a soul stirred. Everyone was holding their breath for the next part. My eyes trained on Clarie's every movement. Adjusting her grip on the white probe, the woman moved it around some more before she clicked a few things on the keyboard.
Next, came the sound that would change everything—a loud, steady heartbeat.
"That's your pup's heartbeat," the healer revealed. I didn't expect to get so emotional. Instantly, my first reaction was to cry. Tears trickled down my cheeks as I listened to the rhythmic sound. Everything hit me at once.
I'm really pregnant...
It was completely surreal to hear such a familiar sound projecting from the ultrasound machine.
I was pregnant, a guy, me—pregnant. Seriously, you just can't make this shit up.
Glancing over at my mates, I also got a surprise of a lifetime too. Nate was trying to fight off the tears but lost, a steady stream flowing down, where Theo held himself together but his forest green eyes were on the verge of giving in too. The Alphas had forgone their tough facade, immediately melting at the sight of our little one. At that very moment, no one cared who the father was. They were just genuinely happy to see a glimpse of the new life inside me.
"That's a strong heartbeat, a great sign that the baby is doing well," Clarie said softly. The woman was also emotional, wiping a fallen tear as she tried to stay focused on the task.
"Now, let's see where the little bugger is hiding." Up for the challenge, Claire guided the large probe around my stomach, searching for the tiny soul. My eyes were affixed to the TV screen, trying to figure out what any of those grainy gray images could mean. It was still hard to tell though. My eyes strained to make sense of it all.
"Hold on, I think I found something." Clarie moved the probe a tad bit over to the right, revealing a round, oval shape on the screen.
"Is that—?"
"Yep, that's your baby, Remy." She zoomed in a bit more, taking pictures of the results. I looked over to Theo and Nate, both Alphas leaning over to get a good look at the image as well.
