I awoke with a start. The morning sun brightened the dim stone room. As my eyes adjusted, I took in the sight I had woken up to for the past five years. Exactly five years ago today, my mother gave me to the wolves.
Five years is a long time. Lupa told me she had a surprise planned for today. As I prepared for the day, my dream slipped away, as they often do. I could only remember bits and pieces—a bright green light, screaming, and the feeling of terror.
The halls of the wolf house were built like my bedroom. They were made of stone. My bare feet were frozen against the cold floor. I walked to the eating hall carrying my breakfast. Nuts and berries. The pack ate together, but I had to eat my own because I was human and couldn't eat raw meat. Some days, I cooked meat over a fire, but I didn't feel like collecting wood.
The entire pack was at breakfast today. Usually, a couple are on duty, but not today. Even with the extra wolves, breakfast went on as it usually does. Afterward, Lupa approached me.
"Come with me, pup," She told me. Lupa began to lead me to her room.
"As you know, today marks five years of you being here. The mortals call today Halloween, but we know it as Samhain. You are six, and I think it is time I told you about your other heritage," We reached Lupa's room, and she let me in first. I sat on the floor, and she sat in front of me.
"What do you mean?" I asked, confused.
"You know of the Roman gods," I nodded, "Good, I'd be worried if you didn't. I've mentioned the Greeks, have I not? Yes, well, they are still around. And like the roman gods have kids, the greek gods also have kids. They live on the east coast in Manhattan,"
"Where's that?" I asked.
"New York,"
"Where's that?"
"On the east coast,"
"Where's that?"
"On the other side of the country,"
"Why?"
"Because the greeks live there to keep their distance from the romans,"
"Why?"
"Because the Romans and Greeks have a tendency to fight with each other,"
"Why?"
"Because the greeks believe we stole a statue that they like,"
"Why?"
"Because the greeks are idiots,"
"Why?"
"Because they are. Now, enough questions, be quiet."
"Wh-" My question was cut off by a stern glare from Lupa. Most would weep from her stare, but I held my ground and glared back.
"Very good pup. Now, keep your mouth shut, and let me finish. It is time for you to go." My face was kept neutral, but I was screaming on the inside. Go? I can't go. Even though I was freaking out, I did not show any sadness. Sadness is weakness, and I would be eaten if I showed weakness. That was the first thing I learned at the wolf house.
"You have been here long enough. You spent five years learning about your Roman heritage. It's time to spend a little under five years learning about your Greek heritage," It took everything to stop my mouth from dropping open.
"Greek heritage?" I asked. Lupa nodded.
"While you are a Roman demigod, you are also a Greek demigod. A unique case that has only happened once before. Thousands of years ago," Lupa explained.
"But, why only five years there? Where will I go when I'm 11? Will I come back here?" I asked hopefully.
"Maybe. If you do ever come back here, it will be when you are older. Your Greek mentor will explain it all to you when you are old enough," Lupa said.
"Who's my Greek mentor?"
"Chiron."
"Who's Chiron?"
"A centaur from the myths."
"The Chiron?" Lupa had me read several books on the Greeks a while back. It was fascinating to see the difference between Greece and Rome.
"Yes, the Chiron. He will be your mentor while you live at Camp Half-blood. Any more questions" I nodded.
"Just two, first, is my mom still my mom?"
"Yes, she is. She just has a different greek name,"
"Second, when do I leave?" A knock at the door had me on two feet, daggers ready.
"Now."
