Scratch, scratch...
"If the variable for magical output relies on the user's capability to control emotions, then that would mean..."
Somewhere, long ago in a little house, there was a young boy working in his notebook. Dozens of books were piled up around him on the desk, and a small candle lit up his room. The boy tapped his pencil against the holder of the candle and sighed. He then turned the paper over and began to write on the new sheet.
"Hmm?"
Someone had opened the door to his room. It was his mother. She held a tray of food and set it down next to him.
"How much work have you gotten done today, Riddle?"
The boy named Riddle looked at the desk. "Only 2 textbooks worth of work, mother. I'm very sorry."
"Your work production has gone down, Riddle. Stop for today, but tomorrow I expect 4 textbooks to be complete. Eat and go to bed. I'm very disappointed."
"Yes, mother." Riddle's mom stormed out the room and slammed the door. A book from one of the stacks suddenly fell down and landed on an open page. Riddle went to close it when he stopped.
"Briaria... what's that?"
Riddle hesitantly reached out for the page. Mother said to eat and go to bed. She doesn't want me reading this...
However, something drew him closer to the book. He never heard of Briaria. Was it a place? A flower? An animal?
Riddle's curiosity got the best of him. He turned the page, then was stunned to see what he was reading.
"A magical kingdom far above the heavens exists, filled with magic and wonder. It is a kingdom named Briaria. The prince of this land sealed away the entrance to this world long ago to keep their land a secret. This single journal holds the key to reopening the gateway to this land..."
Riddle flipped the page. "What are these?" Someone had carved into the back of the book, where there was a small pocket covered by a leather flap. He opened the flap to see three small objects inside it.
"Beans...?"
Three green beans were inside the flap. Riddle reached out to grab them, entranced by the soft green light.
BAM!
"RIDDLE ROSEHEARTS!! Why are you not in bed yet young man?! I sent you 20 minutes ago!"
"A-apologies mother! I was just-"
"And you haven't even touched your supper?! Unbelievable!" Riddle's mother grabbed him by the ear and dragged him to his bed. She pushed him down and grabbed his plate.
"You're GROUNDED young man. Don't even THINK of going out to see those... hooligans you call friends. Now get to bed this INSTANT."
Riddle nodded and quickly dressed for bed. He blew out the candle on his desk, then bundled under the covers. His mother stormed out the room, slamming the door and making the books fall.
Once he was sure she was gone, Riddle peered out the blanket and sighed. He then opened the book, moved into the moonlight, and began to read.
~
"To get to this enchanted land, place the beans beneath the light of a full moon within the forest. Then, say the intention, "I wish to see a world above, enchant me with the stars and love". Then sleep and remain peaceful. Once you awaken, you will surely see a path to reach the kingdom, as long as you intend with a noble heart."
Riddle glanced at the sky, then back at the book.
Am I going to try to get there? Mother would be furious...
Riddle thought back to how angry she was with him for failing to reach his goal. He winced as he remembered her stern voice reprimanding him harshly.
I want to see this world for myself. I need to get out of this home. Mother is treating me like a servant.
Riddle made up his mind. He leapt out of bed, grabbed a satchel, then moved to the kitchen. He took several pieces of fruit and little boxes of crackers with him. He then grabbed his book and placed it in the bag as well. He grabbed his cloak and a small kitchen knife to defend himself with. Everything was now ready for him to leave to find Briaria. He placed his belongings under the bed, jumped back in, and proceeded to sleep to save up his energy.
~
A rooster in the distance crowed. Riddle quickly grabbed his belongings from beneath the bed and stretched. He then turned to his window, opened it, and paused.
I should leave a note. Mother might get worried.
He shook his head. He took one last glance in his room and jumped out the window. He landed on the grass, then took off running towards the forest.
~
"Riddle? Wake up! Breakfast is ready! Then you have to go and study- Riddle?" Riddle's mother had called for her son, but there was no response. She dropped her fork, then hammered a fist on his door. "Riddle Rosehearts, you open this door this instant!"
No response.
Riddle's mother forced the door open, then paused. Where was Riddle?
"Riddle? RIDDLE?!" She moved inside the room and looked around.
"Where is Riddle?! RIDDLE!!!"
~
Riddle could hear his mother's voice yelling for him in the distance. He didn't dare stop, should she unleash her insatiable wrath upon him. He only had one goal; find Briaria and get to it.
With new determination in his eyes, Riddle kept running, deeper and deeper into the woods. He was finally free from his mother's tyranny, and he would use this chance to see the world for himself.
